Science Tutors in Switzerland — Biology, Chemistry and Physics

4.9rated by families in Switzerland · from 1,756 client reviews

The IB sciences were rewritten for first assessment in 2025. The options are gone, the internal assessment is now a scientific investigation worth a fifth of the grade, and a great deal of the revision material your child will find online describes a course that no longer exists. This page describes the one that does — and prices it in Swiss francs per sixty taught minutes.

From age 11 that is CHF 95 an hour in any of the three sciences — Higher Level and advanced Matura work included. A learner aged 10 or under is CHF 85. Our most accomplished tutors are CHF 130, on any work, by your choice. All-in, all per 60 full minutes, the same figure at your kitchen table or online. No enrolment fee, no admin fee, no travel surcharge.

Science tutoring across Switzerland

What does a science tutor in Switzerland cost?

A science tutor in Switzerland costs CHF 95 per 60 minutes with Good Tutors Finder from age 11 upwards — biology, chemistry and physics, at Standard Level and at Higher Level in the Diploma, in the Middle Years Programme, at IGCSE, at A Level, in the Matura Grundlagenfach and in the science Schwerpunktfächer. A learner aged 10 or under is CHF 85. Distinction, our most accomplished tutors, is CHF 130 an hour and you choose it on any work. Prepaid packages lower it: ten hours at the Specialist tier are CHF 810, which is CHF 81 an hour. No enrolment fee, no travel surcharge, and the same figure at your kitchen table or online.

CHF 95

Per 60 taught minutes, in any of the three sciences, at Standard Level and at Higher Level alike. The top band in the Group 4 subjects is genuinely hard to reach — the numbers are further down this page — and it does not change the figure. Distinction, at CHF 130, is our most accomplished tutors rather than a harder level, and it is yours to ask for. Full grid on tutoring prices.

Group 4 course structure, the components introduced for first assessment in 2025 and the grade distributions are from the International Baccalaureate Organization's own subject guides and its May 2025 provisional statistical bulletin. Swiss university entry conditions are from swissuniversities and from ETH Zurich's and EPFL's own admission pages. Competitor prices are as published on the providers' own Swiss pages and read in August 2026.

The syllabus changed and most people missed it

The IB sciences were rewritten — first examined in 2025

If your child started the Diploma from 2023 onwards, they are on a different course from the one their older sibling sat, and from the one most tutoring material online still describes. Three changes matter, and one of them removes an entire revision strategy.

The Options are gone

Biology, chemistry and physics each used to carry an option topic — a self-contained extra unit chosen by the school and worth a paper of its own. The rewritten courses have no options and no options paper. A student revising from a pre-2023 textbook or a second-hand revision guide is revising material that will not appear, and skipping material that will. This is the single most common wasted month we see.

The internal assessment is now the scientific investigation

One piece of internally assessed work — an independent research paper — worth 20% of the grade at both Standard and Higher Level, and now capable of being carried out collaboratively where the school allows it. The old individual investigation is what it replaces. It is written to your school's internal deadline, and that deadline is the one that governs your family.

And a collaborative sciences project sits alongside it

An interdisciplinary project addressing a real-world problem, sitting where the old Group 4 Project did. It is not the same thing as the scientific investigation and the two are routinely confused — including by providers writing about them. Ten hours of the course is set aside for each.

Standard and Higher Level now share a core

Higher Level is the Standard Level syllabus plus additional content: 150 teaching hours against 240 in each of the three subjects. That has a practical consequence a lot of families never hear — moving from Higher to Standard Level part-way through is less catastrophic than it used to be, and it is a real option in January of DP2 when a student is drowning in one subject and losing the other five to it.

Component weightings as published in Diploma Programme curriculum guides for the courses first assessed in 2025. The 20% internal component is the part of the grade most open to being improved by teaching, because most marks lost there are lost on an unanswerable research question, on method and on evaluation rather than on science. It is also the part where the academic-honesty line matters most — see below.

Prices and packages

Science packages, and how long you have

Hours are bought prepaid in blocks of 5, 10 or 20, and the discount is for paying upfront rather than for buying in bulk. Five hours is one topic rebuilt before a test; ten is a scientific investigation taken from research question to finished draft; twenty is a full Higher Level subject run weekly from September to the mocks. Two clocks run on every package and we state both, always.

Specialist — CHF 95 an hour. Biology, chemistry and physics at Standard Level and at Higher Level in the Diploma, Environmental Systems and Societies, the whole Middle Years Programme, IGCSE Coordinated, Combined and separate sciences, Cambridge AS and A Level sciences including the practical components, the Matura Grundlagenfächer and the science Schwerpunktfächer, and ETH, EPFL and medicine-track admissions preparation. This is the tier nearly every Swiss science family buys.

How long you have

A full year to use your package. Your best rate held for up to three months.

Two clocks, doing different things. The short one protects the rate you paid. The long one is how long the value stays on your account — which matters in the sciences more than in most subjects, because the work arrives in waves: a research question in the autumn, data collection in the winter, mocks, then the papers themselves in the spring.

20 hoursBest rate held for 3 months
Every package — valid for 12 months from the day you buy it Long enough to run from a research question in DP1 through the investigation and into the winter mocks of DP2.
  • The rate clock pauses over school holidays, automatically, on your own school's calendar. Cantonal calendars do not agree with each other, and an international school's breaks rarely match the canton around it. We use your school's dates, not an average.
  • One free one-month extension on the rate window, for the asking, up to 30 days before it closes. Auto-approved, and we offer it before you have to ask.
  • When the rate window closes, nothing is taken. The hours already used are recalculated at the standard rate and the balance stays on your account for the rest of the twelve months.
  • You will hear from us long before the year is up — a reminder at nine months and another at eleven. That is an operating requirement here, not a courtesy.
A worked example, on a Group 4 timeline. A family buys a Specialist 10-hour package in early October and spends seven hours turning a vague chemistry idea into an answerable research question, sorting out the control of variables and reading a first draft, before the two-month rate window closes in December. Seven hours at the standard CHF 95 is CHF 665, so CHF 145 stays on the account. That balance is still there in April for Paper 1B data practice, redeemed against the rate on the day. Nothing was confiscated when the rate window closed — the family simply stopped earning a discount they had not used.

If it isn't right

What happens if the first lesson disappoints you?

Two guarantees sit on the first lesson of a package and you choose which one applies. We never choose on your behalf and we never steer you towards the second — a guarantee you have to extract is not a guarantee.

01

Not right? Your money back.

If the first lesson on your package does not meet your expectations for tutor knowledge or professionalism, the whole package goes back to your card — including the hour you already had. No questions and no conditions.

02

Or carry on with someone else.

Would you rather stay? We assign a different tutor and credit that hour straight back to the package. You can ask for a different tutor at any later point too, at no cost, though a lesson already taught stands.

03

Fourteen days to change your mind

Bought a package and had second thoughts before starting? A full refund to your card within 14 days, provided no lesson has been taken. Switzerland gives no statutory right of withdrawal for an online purchase — this one is ours, voluntarily.

04

Free cancellation until 17:00

Cancel or reschedule until 17:00 the day before and the hour is not deducted from your package. Children get ill and school trips move. No minimum term, no notice period and no enrolment fee.

One word, five different subjects

What "science" means in a Swiss school year

"Science" is not one thing here. Depending on the school your child attends, it is three separate examined subjects, two grades from a double award, one integrated course, or a Schwerpunktfach that changes the shape of the whole Matura. Working out which one you are in is the first hour's work.

IB Diploma Group 4

Biology, chemistry and physics as separate subjects at Standard or Higher Level, plus Environmental Systems and Societies, sports science, design technology and computer science. swissuniversities requires six subjects covering, among others, a natural science — and requires at least three at Higher Level, one of which must be mathematics or a natural science. In practice that makes a Higher Level science close to compulsory for Swiss university entry on the IB.

The Matura — three Grundlagenfächer, then a choice

Biology, chemistry and physics are separate compulsory basic subjects in the gymnasiale Matura. On top of that sit the science Schwerpunktfächer: Biologie und Chemie, taught heavily through laboratory work and excursions, and Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik, which adds relativity, matrices and complex numbers. In Canton Lucerne in 2023/24 about a fifth of gymnasium students took Biologie und Chemie and about a tenth took PAM.

IGCSE — double award or three separates

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is a double award: biology, chemistry and physics taught in one cross-referenced syllabus, producing two IGCSE grades. Combined Science 0653 is a single award producing one. Three separate sciences produce three. Which route your child's school runs decides how much content they meet before the Diploma, and it is the most common reason a strong IGCSE student struggles in DP1.

A Level sciences, and the practical you cannot avoid

Cambridge AS and A Level biology, chemistry and physics. One thing worth knowing before you plan around a private-candidate entry: Cambridge states plainly that every entry option for AS and A Level sciences includes a practical component and that there is no alternative to practical skills assessment. At IGCSE there is an Alternative to Practical paper; at A Level there is not.

Zurich Gymi and ZAP — no science paper at all

This surprises people, so it is worth saying plainly: the Zurich central entrance examination, for both the Langgymnasium and the Kurzgymnasium, examines German and mathematics only. There is no biology, chemistry, physics or Naturwissenschaften paper. If a provider is selling you science tutoring as Gymi preparation, they are selling you something the examination does not contain.

The MYP sciences

Criterion-marked integrated science in the years before the Diploma, and where the decision about which Group 4 subjects to take at which level actually gets made. Several Swiss schools publish named MYP grade thresholds for entry to Higher Level science courses. Detail on the MYP tutor page.

The line, published

What we will not tell you about science and a medical place

The sciences are where the most confident false claims in this market are made, because the destination — medicine, ETH, EPFL — is emotive and the route is genuinely complicated. Three of them are worth correcting on a page that is trying to sell you tutoring.

The Swiss medicine aptitude test does not examine science

The EMS, sat by candidates for the Universities of Basel, Bern, Fribourg and Zurich, USI and ETH Zurich, is not a knowledge test. swissuniversities says so in terms: it tests reasoning, memory and logical and spatial understanding, across multiple-choice task groups and a concentration subtest. It does not ask chemistry, biology or physics questions. Anyone selling you science tutoring as EMS preparation is either confused or hoping you are. What the sciences genuinely decide is the Matura or IB grade that gets your child to the starting line — pre-registration closes on 15 February, and the test is sat in the first week of July.

A Higher Level science is close to compulsory, and that is the real pressure

swissuniversities requires at least three IB subjects at Higher Level, one of which must be mathematics or a natural science. ETH Zurich requires Higher Level mathematics plus a Higher Level science and a Language A, at 38 of 42 points. EPFL requires Higher Level mathematics and Higher Level physics plus chemistry, biology or computer science — with 6 out of 7 in each of maths and physics. That is a precise, checkable target, and it is chosen on an option form two years before it matters.

The top band is genuinely hard, and it differs by subject

In the May 2025 session, Physics at Higher Level had a mean grade of 4.9 from 17,970 candidates, with about 19 per cent reaching a 7. Chemistry at Higher Level had a mean of 4.8 from 20,085 candidates, with about 15 per cent at a 7. Biology at Higher Level had a mean of 4.4 from 33,079 candidates and roughly 7 per cent at a 7. Biology is widely sold as the gentle science. Against the top band, it is the hardest of the three.

What we will do on assessed practical work

  • Teach the science the investigation rests on, and the statistics it needs
  • Explain the assessment criteria band by band, by name
  • Interrogate a research question your child has proposed — is it answerable, is there a measurable variable, can the data be collected in the time available
  • Discuss method, control of variables, uncertainty and how to evaluate a source
  • Read a draft your child has written and give feedback on it
  • Rehearse the reasoning out loud, which is where most evaluation marks are actually won

What we refuse to do

  • Write, edit or proofread any part of the investigation
  • Hand your child a ready-made research question
  • Produce the data, the graphs or the analysis
  • Run repeated rounds of edits on the same piece of work
  • Sell science tutoring as preparation for an aptitude test that contains no science
  • Promise a grade, a points total or a medical place. Nobody can

The IB defines academic misconduct as deliberate or inadvertent behaviour with the potential to confer an unfair advantage. A tutor tidying a paragraph to be helpful has still done it, and it is the candidate who carries the consequence — not the tutor and not the tutoring company. That is why the second column above exists in public, on a page whose job is to sell you lessons.

Where you are in the year

The science year, and what to book when

The sciences run on a different rhythm from the rest of the timetable, because a fifth of the grade is coursework with a school-set deadline and because the practical work cannot be caught up in a revision week.

1

August to November

New content, and in DP1 the first Higher Level material — where the gap between coping in MYP 5 and coping at Higher Level becomes visible. Cheap to fix now, expensive later. In the Matura year, the Schwerpunktfach load lands.

2

November to February

The scientific investigation. Research questions are chosen and data is collected, and this is the highest-value tutoring window in the whole Group 4 programme — a bad research question chosen in November costs marks in May that no amount of revision recovers. Mocks follow, then predicted grades.

3

March to June

IB written papers run from late April into the middle of May. Cambridge finals, including the practical papers, run into June. Matura written examinations sit across the spring by canton. Revision now is Paper 1B data work and Paper 2 command terms, not new content.

4

July to August

Results, and the arrival season. A family landing in July with a child who has done double-award Coordinated Science and is about to start Higher Level chemistry has a specific, closeable content gap — and three to six weeks in which to close it before term restarts.

We do not print examination session dates on this page. Boards issue their timetables to schools and we will not repeat a date we have not read in the official schedule ourselves. Internal deadlines for the scientific investigation are not published centrally at all — the IB sets a submission date for schools and asks schools to set their own internal deadlines for each stage, so the date that governs your child is your school's date. Ask the coordinator and work back from it.

The thing nobody else will tell you

Why can you not compare two science tutoring prices in Switzerland?

Because the market quotes in at least three different lesson lengths and frequently in none at all. In August 2026 we read the live pages of the Swiss providers visible for science tutoring queries. One publishes per 90 minutes, several per 45, one per 60, and two of the largest publish a figure with no length attached to it. A survey of the Swiss market prices at-home tutoring at CHF 60–95 per 45 minutes — which is CHF 80–127 an hour, and is not how it reads.

Read from each provider's own live Swiss pages in August 2026, and described rather than named because the point is the pattern and not a fight with any one of them. The conversions are arithmetic: a 45-minute lesson at CHF 64 is CHF 85.33 per 60 taught minutes. Where a provider does not state a length we have not converted the figure, because a conversion we cannot justify is worse than no number. The pair-teaching row matters more than it looks — several Swiss institutes publish a one-to-one-looking price that describes two children sharing a teacher.

What actually sets the price

Where your child's science sits, and what it costs

Foundation and Specialist are set by the age of the learner and the complexity of the work. The city, the subject name and whether the lesson happens at your table or online never change it. Age 10 is a hard ceiling on the Foundation rate for a school subject: an eleven-year-old doing basic catch-up is quoted at Specialist. That is deliberate, and it means we can quote you from your child's age without a diagnostic. Distinction sits outside that logic entirely — it is our most accomplished tutors, and we will never tell you the work requires it; that is your call, not ours.

Assigned, not browsed

You do not sort through a directory of strangers. Tell us the school, the year, the subject and the level, and we assign the right person — typically within 48 to 72 hours. Nothing to pay to enquire and nothing to pay to be assigned.

Reassigned without friction

If the fit is wrong, say so. We reassign at no cost, and your hours stay with your family — they were never attached to one tutor, or to one subject.

Named claims, or none

We describe a tutor as an examiner or an international-school teacher only where that is verified on the roster for that assignment. It is never a tier name, never a package name and never a standing brand claim. Our top tier is called Distinction for exactly that reason.

Questions

Common questions from science families in Switzerland

How much does a science tutor cost in Switzerland?

CHF 95 per 60 minutes with Good Tutors Finder from age 11 upwards for biology, chemistry or physics, all-in — and that includes Higher Level, A Level, advanced Matura and university-entrance work. A learner aged 10 or under is CHF 85. Distinction, our most accomplished tutors, is CHF 130 an hour and you choose it on any work. Prepaid packages lower it: five hours are CHF 440, which is CHF 88 an hour; ten are CHF 810, which is CHF 81; and twenty are CHF 1,560, which is CHF 78. There is no enrolment fee, no travel surcharge and no difference in price between a lesson at your table and a lesson online. Elsewhere in this market published rates run from about CHF 24 an hour on a marketplace to CHF 160 face to face at a Geneva agency that also charges a CHF 100 enrolment fee — and a Swiss market survey puts at-home tutoring at CHF 60–95 per 45 minutes, which is CHF 80–127 an hour once you convert it.

What actually changed in the IB sciences for 2025?

Three things. The option topics were removed, so biology, chemistry and physics each have two written papers and no options paper. The individual internal assessment was replaced by the scientific investigation, an assessed independent research paper worth 20% of the grade at both levels, which can now be carried out collaboratively where the school allows it. And a collaborative sciences project, addressing a real-world problem across disciplines, sits where the old Group 4 Project did. Higher Level is now explicitly the Standard Level syllabus plus additional content — 240 teaching hours against 150. The practical consequence for families is blunt: revision material written before 2023 covers topics that will not appear and misses material that will.

Which is harder — biology, chemistry or physics?

It depends what you mean by harder, and the numbers are counterintuitive. In the May 2025 session, Physics at Higher Level had a mean grade of 4.9 from 17,970 candidates with about 19 per cent reaching a 7. Chemistry at Higher Level had a mean of 4.8 from 20,085 candidates with about 15 per cent at a 7. Biology at Higher Level had a mean of 4.4 from 33,079 candidates, with roughly 7 per cent at a 7. So biology has the lowest mean and by some distance the smallest share of top grades, despite being widely recommended as the gentler science. Those are global figures and they describe the cohort each subject attracts as much as the subject itself — but if your child is choosing biology because it looks like an easy 7, that is not what the data says.

Does my child need a science at Higher Level for a Swiss university?

Effectively, yes, on the IB. swissuniversities requires six subjects covering the first language, a second language, mathematics, a natural science, a humanities or social science and an elective — with at least three at Higher Level, one of which must be mathematics or a natural science. So a student can satisfy it with Higher Level mathematics and no Higher Level science, but that is a narrow path. ETH Zurich requires Higher Level mathematics plus a Higher Level science plus a Language A, at 38 of 42 points. EPFL requires Higher Level mathematics and Higher Level physics plus chemistry, biology or computer science, with grades of at least 6 out of 7 in mathematics and physics.

Is science tutoring useful for the Swiss medicine entrance test?

Not directly, and we would rather say so than take the booking. The EMS aptitude test, used by the Universities of Basel, Bern, Fribourg and Zurich, USI and ETH Zurich, is explicitly not a knowledge test: swissuniversities describes it as testing reasoning and memory, and logical and spatial understanding, across multiple-choice task groups and a concentration subtest. It does not ask chemistry, biology or physics questions. What the sciences decide is the Matura or IB grade that gets your child into the process at all. Pre-registration closes on 15 February and the test is sat in the first week of July. If someone is selling you science tutoring as EMS preparation, ask them to show you the science in the test.

Coordinated Science double award, Combined Science, or three separate IGCSEs — does it matter?

It matters a lot, and mostly for what happens afterwards. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 teaches biology, chemistry and physics in one cross-referenced syllabus and produces two IGCSE grades. Combined Science 0653 is a single award producing one. Three separate sciences produce three, and cover considerably more content in each. A student arriving in DP1 Higher Level chemistry from a double award has a real, specific gap — not a talent problem, a coverage problem — and it is closeable in a summer if it is identified in the summer rather than in November.

Can you help with the scientific investigation?

Yes, within a line we publish rather than blur. We will teach the science and the statistics it rests on, explain the assessment criteria band by band, interrogate a research question your child has proposed — is it answerable, is there a measurable variable, can the data actually be collected — discuss method, control of variables, uncertainty and source evaluation, read a draft your child has written and give feedback on it, and rehearse the reasoning out loud. We will not write or edit any part of it, hand your child a ready-made research question, produce the data or the graphs, or run repeated rounds of edits. The IB defines academic misconduct as deliberate or inadvertent, so a tutor tidying a paragraph to be helpful has still done it — and it is your child who carries it.

Is there a science paper in the Zurich Gymi entrance examination?

No. The Zurich central entrance examination for both the Langgymnasium and the Kurzgymnasium is written, and it examines German and mathematics only — Sprachbetrachtung and Textverständnis, an essay, and a mathematics paper. There is no biology, chemistry, physics or general-science component of any kind. If your child is preparing for the Gymi, the science tutoring you want is none, and the maths and German tutoring you want is on the maths and German pages.

What is the difference between the two science Schwerpunktfächer?

Biologie und Chemie is the laboratory-facing one — experiments, practical work and excursions, extending both Grundlagenfächer. Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik, usually shortened to PAM, is the mathematics-facing one: it goes beyond the Grundlagenfach into relativity, matrices and complex numbers, with heavy computer use. In Canton Lucerne in 2023/24, roughly a fifth of gymnasium students took Biologie und Chemie and roughly a tenth took PAM, and PAM was chosen considerably more often by male students. Under the revised federal ordinance the Schwerpunktfach catalogue is set cantonally, so check what your child's school actually offers rather than assuming the national list.

My child is a private candidate. Can they still sit the practical?

At IGCSE, usually — Cambridge offers both a Practical Test and an Alternative to Practical paper, though availability depends on the examination centre. At AS and A Level, Cambridge states plainly that every entry option for the sciences includes a practical component and that there is no alternative to practical skills assessment. So a private A Level science candidate must find a centre that offers the practical, and that constraint should shape the plan from the beginning rather than being discovered in the spring.

Does Higher Level science cost more than Standard Level?

No — both are Specialist at CHF 95 an hour. Higher Level is 240 teaching hours against 150, with harder papers and a top band that is genuinely hard to reach, and it is still CHF 95. So are the science Schwerpunktfächer, A Level sciences including the practicals, ETH, EPFL and medicine-track admissions work, the MYP, IGCSE and the Matura Grundlagenfächer. The only figure above CHF 95 is Distinction at CHF 130, and that is our most accomplished tutors rather than a harder level: you can ask for it on any science at any level, and we will never tell you the work requires Distinction; that is your call, not ours.

How quickly can we start, and is there a free trial?

Typically 48 to 72 hours from your enquiry to a named tutor. Faster is sometimes possible and we will never guarantee it. There is no free trial, and the reason is not meanness: a free lesson signals that the hour is a sample rather than teaching, and it fills a diary with people who were never going to book. Instead the first hour is charged at the standard single-hour rate — CHF 95, or CHF 130 if you have chosen Distinction — and if you then buy a package that amount comes straight off it, so the hour you already had is re-priced at the package rate along with the rest. Ten Specialist hours cost CHF 810 whether you buy the package outright or take one hour first. And that first lesson carries both guarantees: your money back, or a different tutor with the hour credited. You choose which.

What is the first thing we should do?

Tell us three things: the school, the year, and which science and which level is actually the problem — Higher Level chemistry, double-award IGCSE, the Grundlagenfach Physik, the scientific investigation. That is enough for us to come back with a named tutor who has taught it, typically within 48 to 72 hours, and enough for us to tell you honestly whether tutoring is the right answer at all. Sometimes it is not — a student on the wrong course does not need more hours, they need a conversation with the coordinator — and we would rather say so. Nothing is charged to enquire and nothing is charged to be assigned. Book a tutor, or send a WhatsApp message on +41 76 213 1843 and ask what we would do in your position.

Tell us the school, the year and which science is actually the problem

Higher Level chemistry at ISZL is a different assignment from a double-award IGCSE at a British school in Geneva, or the Grundlagenfach Physik at a Kantonsschule in Bern. Tell us which, and we come back with a tutor who has taught it — typically within 48 to 72 hours. There is no enrolment fee, and no fee of any kind to enquire or to be assigned. If we think tutoring is not what your family needs, we will say so.
