Science Tutors in Zug — Two Systems, One Lab Coat

CHF 95 per 60 minutes for IB Biology, Chemistry and Physics at Standard Level and Higher Level, MYP sciences, IGCSE, Natur und Technik, Schwerpunktfach, Maturaarbeit and Olympiad work, and the Kantonsschule Grundlagenfächer. Prepaid packages lower them: ten Specialist hours are CHF 810, which is CHF 81 an hour, and you save CHF 140.

Yes, but indirectly. The Vornote is built from three subject marks — Deutsch, Mathematik and «Natur, Mensch, Gesellschaft» — from the second semester of Grade 5 and the first semester of Grade 6, alongside the class teacher's recommendation. So science counts as NMG, not as biology, chemistry or physics, and NMG is one of three equally weighted inputs. Today's published guide figure for the Langzeitgymnasium is an Orientierungswert of 5.2, which the canton describes explicitly as not a fixed minimum.

There is none today. The Kantonsrat rejected an entrance examination and passed a counter-proposal instead, whose referendum deadline lapsed unopposed on 9 December 2025 — so admission is currently decided on the Vornote, the teacher's recommendation and, where those diverge, an Abklärungstest. The canton has since published its plan for a Langzeitgymnasium admission built from Vornote, recommendation and an examination, first applied in spring 2028, with the reform reglement setting a Vornote of 5.25 plus recommendation A plus a test result of at least 4.5. The route after Sekundarschule — the Kurzzeitgymnasium — stays examination-free. We will not sell preparation for an examination that does not yet exist.

No. The standardised semester tests are in German and Mathematics only, from Grade 4 of primary through the second semester of Grade 9, counting 20 per cent of the semester mark, piloted in 2027/28 and fully implemented from 2028/29. There is no science paper in that instrument. This is the opposite of what most parents assume, and it is worth knowing before you buy science hours for a reason that does not exist.

Natur und Technik runs at two lessons a week in the first year, four in the second and three in the third, and the same Stundentafel applies in the Werk-, Real- and Sekundarschule. Physics, chemistry and biology share those lessons. It is not a large amount of contact time for three disciplines, which is one honest reason a motivated child heading for a science Schwerpunktfach can benefit from a short, targeted package rather than an open-ended weekly arrangement.

Both cantonal schools offer the two federal science combinations — Biologie und Chemie, and Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik — chosen in the middle of Grade 8 and then taught at four lessons a week for four years. The difference is the final year: Kantonsschule Zug's Ergänzungsfächer include Biologie, Chemie, Physik and Anwendungen der Mathematik, while Kantonale Mittelschule Menzingen offers none of those and has Informatik as its only MINT option. At both schools, a subject already taken as Schwerpunktfach cannot also be taken as Ergänzungsfach. One caution: the new federal ordinance in force since August 2024 lets cantons set their own Schwerpunktfach catalogue by 2032, so today's names are correct today and are not permanent.

New guides, first taught from August 2023 and first examined in May 2025. The internal assessment is now a single scientific investigation — an independent research paper of at most 3,000 words, 10 recommended hours, 24 marks, worth 20 per cent at both Standard and Higher Level, and marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each. The old Group 4 project was replaced, not removed, by the Collaborative Sciences Project: ten recommended hours, interdisciplinary, and not assessed. Note that Environmental Systems and Societies and Sports, Exercise and Health Science changed for May 2026, and Computer Science and Design Technology change for May 2027.

One is the requirement — students must study at least one subject from Group 4. A second science is possible, but the IB's own wording is that an additional sciences, individuals and societies or languages subject is taken instead of a subject in the arts; there is no seventh slot. Environmental Systems and Societies is worth knowing about because it satisfies both Group 3 and Group 4 at once, and at Zurich International School it is offered at Standard Level only. Three subjects minimum at Higher Level, four maximum, at 240 teaching hours each against 150 at Standard Level.

The sector-wide recognition baseline is at least 32 of 42 points, six subjects one from each of six categories including a compulsory natural science, and at least three at Higher Level of which one must be mathematics or another natural science. ETH Zürich asks 38 of 42 for direct admission with Higher Level maths, one of physics, chemistry or biology at Higher Level, and a Higher Level Language A — otherwise the Reduced Entrance Examination. EPFL asks 38 of 42 with maths and physics at 6 out of 7, and publishes a lower bar of 36 points with 5 out of 7 for an IB holder resident in Switzerland. That EPFL physics condition is the reason dropping physics at the end of Grade 10 is a bigger decision than it looks.

It depends entirely on the country, and this is the question we most often have to answer against our own commercial interest. For Swiss medicine, places at Basel, Bern, Fribourg, Zürich and its Luzern and St. Gallen tracks, Università della Svizzera italiana and ETH Zürich are allocated by the Eignungstest für das Medizinstudium, and swissuniversities states that the EMS is not a knowledge test — it measures reasoning, memory and logical and spatial understanding. Better chemistry grades will not raise an EMS score. For UK medicine the opposite holds: UCL asks 39 of 45 with Higher Level biology and chemistry at 6 and 7 in either order, and Higher Level chemistry is close to universal across UK medical schools.

Both models are permitted — MYP sciences courses usually include biology, chemistry and physics, and schools may add interdisciplinary units. Assessment is criterion-referenced on four criteria: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. eAssessment is optional: two-hour on-screen examinations exist for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Integrated sciences and lead to an IB-validated grade and a certificate, but registration is a school decision, not a family one. Ask your school before planning around it.

In Cambridge Coordinated Sciences 0654 it is the school's choice: Paper 5 is a two-hour practical test and Paper 6 is a ninety-minute written alternative about practical work, both 60 marks and 20 per cent, and they need different preparation. It is the first thing we ask.
