Which Zurich school is your child at?

Zurich is unusual: five different examination systems run inside half an hour of Bahnhofstrasse. A tutor who knows "maths" is not the same as a tutor who knows MYP criterion C, IGCSE Extended tier, Analysis and Approaches Higher Level or a ZAP Aufsatz. We assign on the school and the year group, so tell us both.

ZIS

Zurich International School

Lower School in Wädenswil, Middle and Upper School in Adliswil, and more than 1,300 pupils from over 50 countries.

The Upper School runs the IB Diploma alongside Advanced Placement, so a Zurich family can be sitting DP papers and AP papers in the same house. We assign on which of the two, and at which level.

ICS

Inter-Community School Zurich

Zumikon, on the Forch line. The full IB continuum — Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma — in one school.

That continuity is the point and it is also where the work bunches: the MYP-to-DP step in Grade 11, personal projects, and the Diploma core. Tutored as ordinary hours, never as an add-on.

Wallisellen. The IB Diploma and the Swiss bilingual Matura, with pupils able to take both.

A double qualification is a double syllabus, and the German-language Matura subjects are where an internationally-schooled child most often needs the hours.

Cambridge tiering matters here: Core and Extended are different papers with different ceilings, and choosing the tier is a decision worth taking with someone who has taught both.

The two public gymnasiums in canton Zurich that run the combined bilingual Matura and IB Diploma, with biology, history and mathematics taught in English.

Everything else on the Zurich state route is Matura only — MNG Rämibühl, Kantonsschule Küsnacht, Kantonsschule Hottingen and the rest.

The ZAP — Zurich's entrance examination

Every canton handles the step into gymnasium differently. Zurich runs one central written examination on one day for the whole canton, and it is the single highest-stakes date in the Zurich school calendar.

One date, two papers

The next ZAP is Monday 8 March 2027. Pupils in their sixth primary year sit for the Langgymnasium; pupils in their second or third Sek year sit for the Kurzgymnasium. The Kurzgymnasium paper runs longer and adds a composition. They are not the same preparation and should not be tutored as though they were.

Registration is a hard window

Registration runs from 1 January to 10 February 2027, with a CHF 50 fee, and the art-and-sport track closes earlier still, on 15 January. Nothing about the date moves, which is why families who start in the autumn have a materially easier winter than families who start in January.

Preparation is Specialist work

A candidate for the Langgymnasium is still in primary school, and the work is still Specialist at CHF 95 an hour rather than the entry tier — because the paper is a gymnasium entrance paper, not primary-school revision. We say so plainly rather than quoting low and discovering it later.

How do you get a tutor in Zurich?

Three steps, and the first takes two minutes. You book online yourself — we will never put a charge through on your behalf.

  • Tell us three things. Your child's age, the school and year group, and the date you are working towards. Those set the tier, the pack size and the urgency. Nobody else asks about the date.
  • We assign a tutor in 48 to 72 hours, chosen on subject, curriculum, level and availability, then confirmed with you on WhatsApp. If the fit is wrong we reassign at no cost.
  • Start with one hour, not a leap. The first hour is charged at the standard rate for the tier — CHF 85, CHF 95 or CHF 130. Buy a package afterwards and that amount comes straight off it, so the hour you have already had is re-priced at the package rate too.
  • Lessons at home or online, priced the same. Tutors travel across the canton, from the city out to Winterthur and the Oberland; online covers the rest of Switzerland and the weeks your family is away.

Prices for tutoring in Zurich

The same three tiers apply everywhere in Switzerland — Zurich does not carry a city premium and there is no surcharge for the drive out to Wädenswil. Foundation and Specialist are set by your child's age and the complexity of the work. Distinction works differently — it is our most accomplished tutors, and you can choose it on any work, at any level. The discount is for paying upfront, not for buying in bulk.

Foundation — CHF 85 an hour. Any subject, any curriculum, for a learner aged 10 or under — most of our PYP and lower-MYP work in Zumikon and Wallisellen. Plus true-beginner German or French at CEFR A1–A2, at any age, including the newly-arrived parent.

  • The rate clock pauses over your commune's school holidays, automatically, on the cantonal calendar rather than a generic Swiss one. The dates are in the table below, and they are not Zurich's.
  • One free one-month extension on the rate window, for the asking, up to 30 days before it closes. Auto-approved, and we offer it before you have to ask.
  • When the rate window closes, nothing is taken. The hours you have already had are recalculated at the standard rate, and the balance stays on your account for the rest of the twelve months, used against the price at the time.
  • You will hear from us long before the year is up. A reminder at nine months, another at eleven. A balance still unused after twelve months closes — but it should never come as a surprise, and it never has to happen.
A worked example, on Zurich's calendar. A family in Küsnacht buys a Specialist 10-hour package on 1 September. The two-month rate window would ordinarily close on 1 November — but the city's autumn holidays run from 5 to 17 October, so the clock stops for those thirteen days and the window closes on 14 November instead. Nobody has to ask for that, and nobody has to notice it.

The City of Zurich's published Volksschule holiday plan for 2026/27. These are the dates the best-rate clock stops on a package bought by a family at a city school. Zug, Schwyz and Aargau all differ, and so does the cantonal Mittelschule calendar — which is exactly why we run this on your own school's dates rather than an average.

Two Zurich-only school-free Mondays on top of the above: Knabenschiessen on Monday 14 September 2026 and Sechseläuten on Monday 19 April 2027 — the latter falls a week before the spring holidays start, so it is a stand-alone day off. Two calendars, not one: in canton Zurich each commune's Volksschule sets its own holidays and only the start of the year and the Christmas break are binding canton-wide, while the Bildungsdirektion sets the Mittelschule dates centrally and splits the sports holidays into three regional windows — city of Zurich 15–27 February, Unterland 8–20 February, Oberland 22 February–6 March 2027. What CHF 95 an hour buys in Zurich

We are not the cheapest tutoring in Zurich and we do not try to be. This is the densest and best-paid education market in Switzerland, which is precisely why it is worth being specific about what the price covers.

A full 60 minutes

Not 45. Providers across the canton quote in 45-, 60- and 90-minute units interchangeably, so headline prices here are rarely comparable. Ours is always the full hour, with the per-hour figure printed under every package price.

A tutor who has taught the syllabus

MYP criterion C, IGCSE Extended tier, Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and a ZAP Aufsatz are four different jobs, and all four are taught within half an hour of each other here. We assign on curriculum, level and board.

A first lesson you cannot lose on

If the first lesson on your package is not right, you choose: the whole package refunded to your card including that hour, or a different tutor with the hour credited back. No conditions on either, and we never choose for you.

An employed tutor, fully covered

Every tutor is employed through CANICET GmbH, with social contributions, accident cover and liability insurance carried by us. Hiring privately means carrying those obligations yourself.

Cancel or reschedule until 17:00 the day before and the hour is not deducted from your package. Children get ill and school trips move; that is not something to be charged for. No minimum term — stop whenever you like — and no enrolment fee.

Both, at exactly the same price. Tutors travel across the city and the lake communes — Zumikon, Küsnacht, Zollikon, Adliswil, Wädenswil, Dübendorf, Wallisellen and out towards Winterthur. There is no travel surcharge in any direction and no in-person premium. Plenty of families use online lessons through the winter and switch back in spring; the hours are the same hours either way.

How long does it take to get a tutor?

We come back with a tutor, typically within 48 to 72 hours. Faster often happens, and we will never write it down as a promise — it depends on who is free, for which syllabus, in which week of term. What we can promise is what happens if the assignment is wrong: your money back after the first lesson, or a different tutor with that hour credited straight back to your package.

What happens to my hours if we stop for a while?

There are two clocks and they do different things. The best-rate window — one, two or three months depending on the pack — protects the rate you paid, pauses automatically over your own school's holidays, and can be extended once by a month for the asking. The package validity is twelve months from the day you buy, and we remind you at nine months and again at eleven. If the rate window does close, nothing is taken from you: the hours you have already had are recalculated at the standard rate and the balance stays on your account.

Are you a tutor agency or a marketplace?

Neither. Good Tutors Finder is a tutoring service. You buy tuition from us, not an introduction to a stranger, and every tutor is employed through CANICET GmbH with social contributions, accident cover and liability insurance carried by us. Your family carries no AHV, BVG or UVG obligation at all, which is the part that catches people out when they hire privately. If you would rather talk it through before committing to anything, that costs nothing — book a tutor and tell us what your child is sitting, or send a WhatsApp message and ask first.
