Physics Tutors in Switzerland — IB, Matura and IGCSE

4.9rated by families in Switzerland · from 1,756 client reviews

EPFL does not simply ask for 38 points out of 42. It asks for Higher Level physics at 6 out of 7, and Higher Level mathematics at 6 out of 7 alongside it. That is the most precise entry condition in Swiss higher education, and it turns a two-year anxiety into a target you can actually work on. This page names the target and prices the work in Swiss francs per sixty taught minutes.

From age 11 that is CHF 95 an hour — Higher Level, the Schwerpunktfach PAM, A Level and university-entrance work included. A learner aged 10 or under is CHF 85. Our most accomplished tutors are CHF 130, on any work, by your choice. All-in, all per 60 full minutes, the same figure at your kitchen table or online. No enrolment fee, no admin fee, no travel surcharge.

EPFL and ETH Zurich entry conditions are from those institutions' own admission pages; the general Swiss threshold is from swissuniversities. IGCSE Physics 0625 paper structure is from Cambridge International's published syllabus. Competitor prices are as published on the providers' own Swiss pages and read in August 2026.

Higher Level physics at 6 out of 7, for EPFL

Most admissions advice is vague on purpose. EPFL's is not, and it is worth reading carefully, because it turns a two-year anxiety into a specific target that can be worked on. This is what the published conditions actually say.

Read from EPFL's and ETH Zurich's own bachelor admission pages and from swissuniversities' International Baccalaureate page in August 2026. Language requirements for the degree itself — French at B2, C1 recommended, at EPFL — are reserved on top of these and are a separate condition. We have not restated them in full here because they change independently of the subject conditions; check them on the institution's own page before you plan around them.

The option form is where physics is decided

A student who takes Standard Level physics at sixteen is outside EPFL's requirement two years later, whatever they score. No amount of tutoring in DP2 changes that; the only remedies are a level change while one is still possible, or a different destination. This is the single most expensive quiet mistake in the Swiss international-school timetable, and it is made by fifteen-year-olds on a form in the spring.

Two marks is a workable brief

"Raise the grades" is not a plan. "Move Higher Level physics from a 5 to a 6" is — it identifies which papers, which themes and which command terms are actually costing the marks, and it is frequently ten to twenty hours of work rather than a year of it. We would rather sell you the smaller, targeted package and be right about it.

And sometimes the honest answer is no

If a student is at a 3 in Higher Level physics in February of DP2 with a 6 required, we will tell you that the number is not reachable and talk about what is — the ETH entrance route, a different course, or a different institution. We would rather lose the sale than take CHF 1,560 for a target we do not believe in.

Prices and packages

Physics packages, and how long you have

Hours are bought prepaid in blocks of 5, 10 or 20, and the discount is for paying upfront rather than for buying in bulk. Five hours is one theme rebuilt before a mock; ten is a scientific investigation from research question to finished draft, or a targeted run at moving one grade; twenty is a full Higher Level year run weekly. Two clocks run on every package and we state both, always.

Specialist — CHF 95 an hour. IB Physics at Standard Level and at Higher Level, the Middle Years Programme sciences, Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 at Core or Extended tier including the Alternative to Practical, Cambridge AS and A Level Physics including the practical, the Matura Grundlagenfach Physik, the Schwerpunktfach Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik, and EPFL and ETH entrance preparation. This is the tier nearly every Swiss physics family buys.

How long you have

A full year to use your package. Your best rate held for up to three months.

Two clocks, doing different things. The short one protects the rate you paid. The long one is how long the value stays on your account — which matters in physics more than in most subjects, because the largest Higher Level content block usually arrives last, in the term before the mocks.

Every package — valid for 12 months from the day you buy it Long enough to run from a research question in the autumn of DP1 to the papers themselves in the spring of DP2.
  • The rate clock pauses over school holidays, automatically, on your own school's calendar. Cantonal calendars do not agree with each other, and an international school's breaks rarely match the canton around it. We use your school's dates, not an average.
  • One free one-month extension on the rate window, for the asking, up to 30 days before it closes. Auto-approved, and we offer it before you have to ask.
  • When the rate window closes, nothing is taken. The hours already used are recalculated at the standard rate and the balance stays on your account for the rest of the twelve months.
  • You will hear from us long before the year is up — a reminder at nine months and another at eleven. That is an operating requirement here, not a courtesy.
A worked example, on a physics timeline. A family chooses Distinction and buys a 10-hour package in November of DP2 with a target of moving Higher Level physics from a 5 to a 6 for EPFL, and spends seven hours on fields, on Paper 1B data technique and on command terms before the two-month rate window closes in January. Seven hours at the standard CHF 130 is CHF 910, so CHF 200 stays on the account. That balance is still there in April for a last run at nuclear and quantum physics, redeemed against the rate on the day. Nothing was confiscated when the rate window closed — the family simply stopped earning a discount they had not used.

If it isn't right

What happens if the first lesson disappoints you?

Two guarantees sit on the first lesson of a package and you choose which one applies. We never choose on your behalf and we never steer you towards the second — a guarantee you have to extract is not a guarantee.

01

Not right? Your money back.

If the first lesson on your package does not meet your expectations for tutor knowledge or professionalism, the whole package goes back to your card — including the hour you already had. No questions and no conditions.

02

Or carry on with someone else.

Would you rather stay? We assign a different tutor and credit that hour straight back to the package. You can ask for a different tutor at any later point too, at no cost, though a lesson already taught stands.

03

Fourteen days to change your mind

Bought a package and had second thoughts before starting? A full refund to your card within 14 days, provided no lesson has been taken. Switzerland gives no statutory right of withdrawal for an online purchase — this one is ours, voluntarily.

04

Free cancellation until 17:00

Cancel or reschedule until 17:00 the day before and the hour is not deducted from your package. Children get ill and school trips move. No minimum term, no notice period and no enrolment fee.

What is actually on the course

IB Physics since 2023, theme by theme

The Diploma physics course was rewritten for first assessment in 2025. The options are gone, there is no options paper, and the syllabus is now five themes built on three recurring concepts — forces, energy and particles. Higher Level is the Standard Level syllabus plus additional content, 240 teaching hours against 150. Anything your child finds online that mentions an option topic describes a course that no longer exists.

A · Space, time and motion

Kinematics, forces and momentum, work, energy and power at both levels. Higher Level adds rigid body mechanics and Galilean and special relativity — two topics with no Standard Level foothold at all, which is why students moving up mid-course struggle here first.

B · The particulate nature of matter

Thermal energy transfers, the greenhouse effect, the gas laws, thermodynamics, current and circuits. 27 hours at Standard Level against 42 at Higher. The circuits work is where a weak IGCSE background shows up immediately.

C · Wave behaviour

24 hours at Standard Level, 32 at Higher. Conceptually the most forgiving theme and the one students most often leave until last — which is a mistake, because it is where the cheapest marks in the whole course live.

D · Fields

17 hours at Standard Level, 29 at Higher. The theme where the mathematics bites: a student who is uncomfortable with rearranging and with inverse-square reasoning will lose marks here that look like physics marks and are not.

E · Nuclear and quantum physics

19 hours at Standard Level and 38 at Higher — the largest Higher Level uplift of the five themes, and typically the last thing taught, in the term before the mocks. Plan for it in advance rather than discovering it in January.

The two internal components

The scientific investigation, an assessed independent research paper worth 20% of the grade at both levels, and the collaborative sciences project, an interdisciplinary piece addressing a real-world problem. They are different things and are routinely confused. About ten hours of course time is set aside for each.

ComponentLength and shapeSame at SL and HLWeightWhere marks go missing
Paper 1Two hours. Section 1A multiple choice, Section 1B data-based36%Section 1B. A student who has revised content and never practised reading an unfamiliar data set loses a third of this paper to a skill nobody taught them.
Paper 2Two hours thirty. Extended response44%Command terms. "Explain" and "describe" are marked differently, and a correct physics answer to the wrong command term scores badly.
Scientific investigationAn assessed independent research paper, around 10 hours of course time20%The research question and the evaluation, almost never the physics. This is the most recoverable fifth of the grade — and the one where the honesty line matters most.

What a physics tutor can and cannot honestly promise

Physics is the subject where the destination is most specific — an engineering place, a named threshold, a number out of seven — and specificity attracts confident promises. Here is what we will and will not say to you.

What we will do

  • Find out whether the gap is physics, mathematics or reading the question — they need completely different work
  • Teach Paper 1B as its own skill: unfamiliar data, gradients, uncertainties, and what the axes are actually telling you
  • Teach the command terms, because a correct answer to the wrong verb scores badly
  • Rebuild the algebra underneath the fields topic, which is usually where the marks are really going
  • Interrogate a scientific-investigation research question your child has proposed and read a draft they have written
  • Prepare candidates for the ETH reduced entrance examination, written and oral — and be blunt about the German
  • Tell you when a required grade is not reachable, and what is

What we refuse to do

  • Promise a grade, a points total or a place at EPFL or ETH. Nobody can
  • Write, edit or proofread any part of the scientific investigation
  • Produce the data, the graphs or the uncertainty analysis
  • Tell you Standard Level physics still satisfies EPFL's condition. It does not
  • Quote Higher Level rates for Standard Level content
  • Sell twenty hours to a family whose problem is two marks in one paper
  • Quote you a "lesson" price without telling you how many minutes are in it

The mathematics is usually the physics problem

A student losing marks in fields, in circuits or in kinematics is very often losing them on rearranging, on index laws, on unit conversion and on sign discipline. Teaching more physics to that student is expensive and does not work. Roughly half our physics first lessons end with a plan that is partly a mathematics plan, and we say so rather than quietly billing physics hours for algebra.

Nineteen per cent, and what that means

About 18.9 per cent of Higher Level physics candidates were awarded a 7 in the May 2025 session, from 17,970 entries, with a mean grade of 4.9. That is the highest share of 7s among the three main sciences — chemistry was around 15 per cent and biology around 7. It is still fewer than one in five. A 7 in Higher Level physics is a genuine achievement and should be planned for over two years, not requested in March.

There is no way round the A Level practical

Cambridge states plainly that every entry option for AS and A Level sciences includes a practical component and that there is no alternative to practical skills assessment. At IGCSE there is an Alternative to Practical paper; at A Level there is not. A private-candidate plan that has not solved the practical is not a plan, and it is better to discover that in September than in April.

The IB defines academic misconduct as deliberate or inadvertent behaviour with the potential to confer an unfair advantage. A tutor tidying an evaluation paragraph to be helpful has still done it, and it is the candidate who carries the consequence. That is why the second column exists in public, on a page whose job is to sell you lessons.

Where physics is examined here

The same subject, four different examinations

A Swiss family can easily have one child sitting a two-hour Paper 1 in May and another sitting a Grundlagenfach examination in German in the spring, on different content, marked on different criteria. This is what each of them is.

IB Diploma Physics

Standard or Higher Level, five themes, two written papers and a scientific investigation worth 20%. First assessed on the current syllabus in 2025. Examined in the May session with results in early July, and a smaller November session behind it.

The Matura Grundlagenfach Physik

One of the three compulsory science basic subjects in the gymnasiale Matura, examined cantonally and usually in German, French or Italian depending on where you are. The content is closer to Standard Level than Higher, but the examination culture — written solutions, method marks, explanation in prose — is different enough that a strong IB student can underperform in it.

Schwerpunktfach Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik

The physics-and-mathematics specialism, usually shortened to PAM. It goes well beyond the Grundlagenfach — relativity, matrices, complex numbers — with heavy computer use. In Canton Lucerne in 2023/24 roughly a tenth of gymnasium students took it. It is Specialist at CHF 95, and it is the Swiss course most often underestimated at the moment it is chosen.

IGCSE Physics 0625

Core route: Paper 1 multiple choice (45 minutes, 30%), Paper 3 theory (1h15, 50%), and either Paper 5 Practical Test (1h15) or Paper 6 Alternative to Practical (1 hour), each 20%. Extended route: Papers 2 and 4 in place of 1 and 3. The Core-versus-Extended decision is made by the school and is worth questioning if your child intends to take physics at Higher Level afterwards.

Cambridge AS and A Level Physics

Two years, with a compulsory practical component and no alternative-to-practical route. The step up from IGCSE is steeper in physics than in either of the other two sciences, principally because the mathematics is no longer optional.

MYP sciences, and the years before all of this

Integrated, criterion-marked science in MYP 1 to MYP 5, where the decision about which Group 4 subjects to take and at which level actually gets made. Several Swiss schools publish named MYP grade thresholds for entry to Higher Level courses. Detail on the MYP tutor page.

Where you are in the year

The physics year, and what to book when

Physics runs on the science rhythm — a fifth of the grade is coursework with a school-set deadline — with one addition of its own: the largest Higher Level content block usually arrives last.

1

August to November

Mechanics, then the particulate theme. In DP1 this is where the gap between coping in MYP 5 and coping at Higher Level first shows, and it usually shows as an algebra problem. The cheapest term in the whole course to fix something in.

2

November to February

The scientific investigation: research question, apparatus, data. A bad research question chosen in November costs marks in May that no revision recovers. Mocks follow, then predicted grades — the number universities see first.

3

February to April

Fields, then nuclear and quantum physics — 38 Higher Level hours in the theme that is usually taught last. Revision from here should be Paper 1B data work and Paper 2 command terms, not new content, and if new content is still arriving that is worth knowing about early.

4

April to August

IB written papers from late April into mid-May; Cambridge finals, including the practical papers, into June; Matura examinations across the spring by canton. Results in July and August, and then the arrival season, when a family lands with a child who has done Core-tier IGCSE physics and is about to start Higher Level.

We do not print examination session dates on this page. Boards issue their timetables to schools and we will not repeat a date we have not read in the official schedule ourselves. Internal deadlines for the scientific investigation are not published centrally at all — they are your school's dates. Ask the coordinator and work back from them. The one date we do print is the ETH entrance examination window, because ETH publishes it.

The thing nobody else will tell you

Why can you not compare two physics tutoring prices in Switzerland?

Because the market quotes in at least three different lesson lengths and often in none at all. In August 2026 we read the live pages of the Swiss providers visible for physics tutoring queries. One publishes per 90 minutes, several per 45, one per 60, and two of the largest publish a figure with no length attached. A headline of CHF 59 against a 45-minute lesson is CHF 79 an hour, and it does not read that way.

Read from each provider's own live Swiss pages in August 2026, and described rather than named because the point is the pattern and not a fight with any one of them. The conversions are arithmetic: a 45-minute lesson at CHF 64 is CHF 85.33 per 60 taught minutes. Where a provider does not state a length we have not converted the figure. The pair-teaching row matters more than it looks — several Swiss institutes publish a one-to-one-looking price that describes two children sharing a teacher.

Assigned, not browsed

You do not sort through a directory of strangers. Tell us the school, the year, the subject and the level, and we assign the right person — typically within 48 to 72 hours. Nothing to pay to enquire and nothing to pay to be assigned.

Reassigned without friction

If the fit is wrong, say so. We reassign at no cost, and your hours stay with your family — they were never attached to one tutor, or to one subject.

Named claims, or none

We describe a tutor as an examiner or an international-school teacher only where that is verified on the roster for that assignment. It is never a tier name, never a package name and never a standing brand claim. Our top tier is called Distinction for exactly that reason.

Finding someone who genuinely understood the curriculum was very important to us. The tutor has been excellent across Biology and Chemistry, explaining difficult topics clearly and helping our daughter apply her knowledge to past-paper questions. We are very happy with the progress she has made.

Questions

Common questions from physics families in Switzerland

How much does a physics tutor cost in Switzerland?

CHF 95 per 60 minutes with Good Tutors Finder from age 11 upwards, all-in — and that includes Higher Level, the Schwerpunktfach, A Level and university-entrance work. A learner aged 10 or under is CHF 85. Prepaid packages lower it: five hours are CHF 440, which is CHF 88 an hour; ten are CHF 810, which is CHF 81; twenty are CHF 1,560, which is CHF 78. If you choose Distinction, our most accomplished tutors, at CHF 130 an hour, five of those hours are CHF 600 and ten are CHF 1,110, which is CHF 111 an hour. There is no enrolment fee, no travel surcharge and no difference in price between a lesson at your table and a lesson online. Elsewhere in this market published physics rates run from about CHF 24 an hour on a marketplace to CHF 160 face to face at a Geneva agency that also charges a CHF 100 enrolment fee — and most providers do not state the length of the lesson, so the comparison is not one you can actually make.

What exactly does EPFL require in physics?

For an international candidate, the IB Diploma with at least 38 points out of 42 excluding bonus points, Higher Level study and examination in mathematics and physics plus one of chemistry, biology or computer science, and final grades of at least 6 out of 7 in both mathematics and physics. EPFL publishes a lower bar for candidates holding a Swiss IB or schooled in Switzerland: 36 of 42 with 5 out of 7 in each of those two subjects. French at B2, with C1 recommended, is a separate condition on top. The practical consequence is stark: a student on Standard Level physics is outside the requirement whatever their total, and that choice was made on an option form two years earlier.

Is physics required for ETH Zurich?

Not specifically. ETH Zurich asks for 38 out of 42 points without bonus points, with Higher Level mathematics — either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation — plus physics, chemistry or biology at Higher Level, plus one Language A, and three further subjects at Standard Level. So physics is one acceptable science of three at ETH and compulsory at EPFL. That difference between the two institutions is the single most common misunderstanding we correct. A candidate who does not meet the threshold can sit ETH's reduced entrance examination instead.

What is on the IB Physics course now?

Five themes, since the rewrite first assessed in 2025: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. There are no option topics and no options paper. Higher Level is the Standard Level syllabus plus additional content — 240 teaching hours against 150 — and adds rigid body mechanics and Galilean and special relativity, which have no Standard Level foothold at all. Assessment is Paper 1 at two hours and 36 per cent, with a multiple-choice section and a data-based section; Paper 2 at two and a half hours and 44 per cent; and the scientific investigation at 20 per cent. The weightings are identical at both levels.

How hard is a 7 in Higher Level physics?

In the May 2025 session, IB Physics at Higher Level had 17,970 candidates and a mean grade of 4.9, with about 18.9 per cent awarded a 7. That is the most generous of the three main sciences at the top band — chemistry was around 15 per cent and biology around 7 — and it is still fewer than one candidate in five. A 7 is a two-year project rather than a spring revision project, and if you are being told otherwise in February of DP2 you are being told something the data does not support.

My child is good at physics but the marks do not show it. What is going wrong?

In our experience it is one of three things, and they need completely different work. It is the mathematics: rearranging, index laws, unit conversion and sign discipline, which look like physics errors and are not. It is Paper 1 Section 1B: reading an unfamiliar data set, extracting a gradient, handling uncertainty — a skill that is examined for a third of a paper and often never explicitly taught. Or it is the command terms: a physically correct answer to "describe" when the question said "explain" scores badly and reads to the student as unfair marking. The first lesson is a diagnosis, and it frequently ends somewhere the family did not expect.

Can you help with the scientific investigation?

Yes, within a line we publish rather than blur. We will teach the physics and the uncertainty analysis it rests on, explain the assessment criteria band by band, interrogate a research question your child has proposed — is it answerable, is there a measurable variable, can the data be collected with the apparatus available — discuss method and control of variables, read a draft your child has written and give feedback on it, and rehearse the reasoning out loud, which is where evaluation marks are actually won. We will not write or edit any part of it, hand your child a research question, produce the data or the graphs, or run repeated rounds of edits. The IB defines misconduct as deliberate or inadvertent, so a tutor tidying an evaluation paragraph has still done it — and it is your child who carries it.

What is in IGCSE Physics 0625?

On the Core route: Paper 1, multiple choice, 45 minutes and 30 per cent; Paper 3, theory, an hour and a quarter and 50 per cent; and then either Paper 5, the Practical Test, at an hour and a quarter, or Paper 6, the Alternative to Practical, at an hour — each worth 20 per cent. The Extended route substitutes Papers 2 and 4 for Papers 1 and 3. The tier decision is made by the school, and it is worth questioning: a student entered at Core who then wants Higher Level physics in the Diploma starts DP1 with a real content gap, and it is much cheaper to argue about the tier in Year 10 than to close the gap in DP1.

Is there an alternative to the practical at A Level?

No. Cambridge states plainly that every entry option for AS and A Level sciences includes a practical component and that there is no alternative to practical skills assessment. At IGCSE and O Level there is an Alternative to Practical paper available to private candidates, subject to what the centre offers, but at A Level there is not. If you are planning a private-candidate entry, solve the practical first — the plan is not a plan until you have.

What is the Schwerpunktfach Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik?

It is the physics-and-mathematics specialism in the Swiss gymnasiale Matura, usually shortened to PAM. It extends and supplements the Grundlagenfächer in mathematics and physics, reaching material such as Einstein's relativity, matrices and complex numbers, with heavy computer use. In Canton Lucerne in 2023/24 roughly a tenth of gymnasium students took it, and it was chosen considerably more often by male students. It is Specialist at CHF 95 an hour, exactly as the Grundlagenfach is. Under the revised federal ordinance the Schwerpunktfach catalogue is set cantonally, so check what your child's own school offers rather than assuming a national list.

Does Higher Level physics cost more than Standard Level?

No — both are Specialist at CHF 95 an hour. Higher Level is 240 teaching hours against 150, adds two topics with no Standard Level foundation, and has a top band reached by fewer than one candidate in five, and it is still CHF 95. So are the Schwerpunktfach Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik, A Level physics including the practical, EPFL and ETH admissions work, the MYP, IGCSE 0625 and the Matura Grundlagenfach. The only figure above CHF 95 is Distinction at CHF 130, and that is our most accomplished tutors rather than a harder level: you can ask for it on any physics at any level, and we will never tell you the work requires Distinction; that is your call, not ours.

How quickly can we start, and is there a free trial?

Typically 48 to 72 hours from your enquiry to a named tutor. Faster is sometimes possible and we will never guarantee it. There is no free trial, and the reason is not meanness: a free lesson signals that the hour is a sample rather than teaching, and it fills a diary with people who were never going to book. Instead the first hour is charged at the standard single-hour rate — CHF 95, or CHF 130 if you have chosen Distinction — and if you then buy a package that amount comes straight off it, so the hour you already had is re-priced at the package rate along with the rest. Ten Specialist hours cost CHF 810 whether you buy the package outright or take one hour first. And that first lesson carries both guarantees: your money back, or a different tutor with the hour credited. You choose which.

What is the first thing we should do?

Tell us three things: the school, the year, and the level and the number you are working towards — Higher Level physics at a 6 for EPFL, IGCSE 0625 Extended, the Grundlagenfach before a spring examination. That is enough for us to come back with a named tutor who has taught it, typically within 48 to 72 hours, and enough for us to tell you honestly whether the number is reachable. Sometimes it is not, and we would rather say so and talk about what is — a level change, the ETH entrance route, or a different destination. Nothing is charged to enquire and nothing is charged to be assigned. Book a tutor, or send a WhatsApp message on +41 76 213 1843 and ask what we would do in your position.

Tell us the level, the year and the number you are working towards

Higher Level physics at a 6 for EPFL is a different assignment from IGCSE 0625 Extended before the summer, or a Grundlagenfach examination in German in the spring. Tell us which, and we come back with a tutor who has taught it — typically within 48 to 72 hours. There is no enrolment fee, and no fee of any kind to enquire or to be assigned. If we think the number is not reachable, we will say so and tell you what is.
