Maths Tutors in Zug — IB, Gymnasium and Matura

No. Canton Zug has run an examination-free transfer procedure since 1993. Admission to the Langzeitgymnasium is decided on an overall assessment of subject marks and development through Grade 5 and the first semester of Grade 6, personal and social competencies, and the child's interests, with a decision by 15 March. There is an Orientierungswert of 5.2 — the average of German, Mathematics and "Natur, Mensch, Gesellschaft" across two named semesters — but the canton states explicitly that this is not a fixed minimum and can be overridden with reasons. Anyone selling you "Gymi exam preparation" for Zug is describing Zurich.

It is the one real examination in Zug's transfer system, and most children never sit it. It exists only for pupils moving from Sekundarschule to the Kurzzeitgymnasium whose class teacher does not support the assignment — and even then only if the pupil is in the highest Niveaukurs in every Niveaufach and holds an Erfahrungsnote of at least 4.8. The 2027 sitting is on 24 and 25 March at Kantonsschule Menzingen, with written papers in German, Mathematics, French and English and no oral component. For maths a calculator is required but no formula booklet is allowed, and the working has to be clearly shown. The syllabus is published by chapter, which makes it unusually straightforward to prepare for.

AA is the calculus course and AI is the statistics-and-modelling course. AA HL runs 55 teaching hours of calculus against AI HL's 41; AI HL runs 52 hours of statistics against AA HL's 33. The structural difference families are rarely told about is the calculator: AA's Paper 1 is calculator-free and worth 40 per cent of the Standard Level grade and 30 per cent at Higher Level, while AI candidates may use a calculator in every paper. Beyond that it is a question about the intended degree, and it should be answered with your school's University Advisor rather than by a tutoring company.

There are three, and the obvious one is not always right. Dropping to AA SL keeps the calculator-free Paper 1 and makes it heavier — 40 per cent of the grade instead of 30. Moving to AI HL swaps 55 hours of calculus for 52 hours of statistics, which is a different subject rather than an easier one. Staying and fixing the diagnosis is the third: a student who is fine in class and collapsing in mocks is very often failing on calculator-free fluency, which is repairable. Whatever you decide, the Exploration is 20 per cent of the grade, is not an exam, and is almost always the fastest lever available. For scale, the IB's May 2025 statistics show AA HL with a mean of 4.9 and 17.7 per cent of candidates finishing on 3 or below.

Not on the evidence. In the May 2025 session AI SL had the lowest mean grade of the four IB maths courses at 3.9, with only 4.0 per cent of candidates achieving a 7 — against 16.4 per cent at AA HL. It is a perfectly good course chosen for the right reason. It is a poor choice made as a risk-reduction move, and families make that move often.

ISZL runs the Middle Years Programme in Grades 9 and 10 and then either the IB Diploma — all four maths courses — or its own High School Programme including AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics. It offers no IGCSE at any grade. Institut Montana Zugerberg runs Cambridge Lower Secondary in Grades 6 to 8, Cambridge IGCSE in Grades 9 and 10 and the IB Diploma in Grades 11 and 12, teaching in English, alongside a Swiss Gymnasium track whose Schwerpunktfächer include Physics and applied mathematics. SIS Swiss International School Rotkreuz-Zug runs a bilingual German–English kindergarten and primary school. We tutor across all of them.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 has two papers per tier — one without a calculator, one with a scientific calculator — and no coursework. Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics 0607 has three: a non-calculator paper, a calculator paper, and a 20 per cent Investigation paper, and it requires a graphic display calculator rather than a scientific one. That matters for an IB-bound student, because the graphic display calculator and the investigation are exactly what the Diploma expects. If your child is on 0580 and heading for the IB, that gap is a known and very tutorable piece of work.

Yes, and also the other way round. Kantonsschule Zug teaches Mathematik in English to students in its bilingual German–English Immersionsklasse from the third year, open to those with Schwerpunktfach Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik, Biologie und Chemie, or Wirtschaft und Recht. So a Zug family can quite easily end up with a child doing Swiss curriculum maths in English, or international curriculum maths while thinking in German. We assign on the language of the examination, not the language of the home.

No. Under the federal Matura recognition ordinance in force since 1 August 2024, Mathematik is a Grundlagenfach and one of only five subjects in which the Matura examination must be taken, alongside the language of instruction, a second national language, the Schwerpunktfach and one further subject. Mathematics, computer science and the natural sciences together must account for at least 27 per cent of teaching time, and only two attempts at the Matura are permitted. Maths is the least avoidable subject in the Swiss system.

Standardised cantonal tests in German and Mathematics, twice a year, from Grade 4 of primary through to the second semester of Grade 9, counting for 20 per cent of the semester grade. They arrived as the counter-proposal to a rejected plan to introduce a Gymnasium entrance examination; the referendum deadline passed unused on 9 December 2025, with a pilot in 2027/28 and full rollout in 2028/29. They are framed as diagnostic rather than selective — but semester maths marks are exactly what the Übertritt assessment and the 5.2 Orientierungswert are built from, so in practice maths has been wired straight into the gateway.

Either, at exactly the same price. Tutors travel across the canton — Baar, Cham, Hünenberg, Rotkreuz, Steinhausen, Menzingen, the city and the Ägeri valley — with no travel surcharge and no in-person premium. Maths tends to work particularly well online because a shared screen beats a shared notebook for working through a solution line by line, but exam technique on paper is usually better at a table.
