Q: What does International School Basel cost in 2026/27?

Annual tuition is CHF 14,390 for EC1 at five mornings, rising to CHF 23,980 for EC1 at five full days and for EC2, CHF 28,210 for EC3 to Grade 5, CHF 32,280 for Grades 6 to 8, CHF 33,650 for Grades 9 and 10, and CHF 38,000 for Grades 11 and 12. A one-off, non-refundable Development Fee of CHF 4,500 is due for every new student when a place is offered, so a first-year Grade 11 entrant is looking at CHF 42,500 before IB examination fees. Those fees are not included, and nor are field trips, meals, IB Diploma online courses, psycho-educational evaluations or a 1:1 Teacher Assistant. Family discounts run from CHF 1,000 for a second child to CHF 4,000 from a fourth. Figures are from ISB's Financial Regulations 2026/27, dated November 2025.

Q: Which ISB campus will my child be at, and which grades are where?

Three campuses, all in canton Basel-Landschaft rather than Basel-Stadt, and all on BLT tram 11. Aesch, at Arlesheimerstrasse 7 in 4147 Aesch, takes EC1 to Grade 6 — the Junior School and the PYP, plus the first MYP year. Fiechten, at Fiechtenweg 72 in 4153 Reinach, takes Grades 7 and 8 and is one tram stop north of Aesch. Reinach, at Fleischbachstrasse 2 in 4153 Reinach, takes Grades 9 to 12, so it houses both the last two MYP years and the whole Diploma Programme. The detail directories most often get wrong: Grade 6 sits at Aesch, not at the Middle School campus, even though it is already in the MYP and pays Middle School fees.

Q: Does ISB offer IGCSE or A Levels?

No. ISB is authorised for three International Baccalaureate programmes and nothing else: the Diploma from 1995, the MYP from 2001 and the PYP from 2003. Grades 9 and 10 are the final two MYP years, not IGCSE years, so there is no tiered entry, no external paper and no grade boundary in those years. There is no A Level provision, no Advanced Placement and no IB Career-related Programme either. ISB is a College Board authorised SAT and PSAT test centre, which is a testing authorisation rather than a curriculum, and an official ABRSM music examination centre. A tutoring page that lists ISB under an IGCSE or A Level heading has not checked the school's own recognitions page.

Q: Which Diploma mathematics courses does ISB actually run?

Three: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level, and Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level. ISB does not offer Applications and Interpretation HL, and states the three-course list twice in its current documents. The confusion is understandable, because ISB's own Mathematics Continuum Guide of March 2022 still contains an AI HL chapter and is still online. Why it matters: ISB's pathway page notes that ETH Zürich and EPFL require at least 38 points and specific Higher Level subjects including HL Mathematics. At this school, HL Mathematics means AA HL, so there is no lighter Higher Level route to those two universities.

Q: What MYP grade does my child need for Higher Level at ISB?

ISB's published rule is a 5. Its course-selection document states: "For HL, we require that students are on track to achieve a grade of 5 or higher in the indicative MYP course(s) stipulated below. For SL, a grade of 3 or higher is required." Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL is stricter — "it is required that students who select this course are on track to achieve a grade of 6 or above in their MYP mathematics course." The evidence used is the Grade 10 mid-year report, and teacher recommendations are shared with the Vice Principal for Academics, the DP Coordinator and the University Counsellors. Separately, students should attain at least a 3 on the Personal Project and are expected to maintain 90 per cent attendance.

Q: When are Grade 11 subject choices made, and can we change later?

All Grade 10 students meet the University Counsellors between January and March of Grade 10, and teacher recommendations are discussed with families at course-choice meetings in January and February. ISB is then unusually direct about changing your mind: "Most likely, changes to original course choices will not be possible after the deadline communicated by the school." Late changes depend on "availability of places in the subject being selected (very limited)" and on "meeting the entry requirements for that subject", and the school closes with "students must not assume they can simply change at a later stage." ISB does not publish a minimum class size, saying instead that course viability depends on staffing, student interest and alternatives in the subject group.

Q: Does ISB run MYP eAssessment or award an MYP Certificate?

No. ISB states that "Two external examinations take place at International School Basel each year: IB Diploma exams and Measuring Academic Progress (MAP) tests." Its Grade 6–10 Curriculum Guide of June 2024 describes MYP assessment purely as school-based and criterion-related, work being "assessed against specified criteria, which are established before the work is undertaken". There is no on-screen examination and no MYP Certificate. The practical consequence is that the first external IB examination an ISB student ever sits is in Grade 12, which changes what useful MYP tutoring looks like: understanding the criteria and building the working habits, rather than drilling past papers that do not exist.

Q: What happens to my child's third language if they need EAL?

In Grades 6 and 7 they lose it. ISB's language documentation states that "students in English as an Additional Language or Learning Support will study English and German. All other students in Grades 6 - 7 study an additional language, either French or Spanish", and its current Grade 7–8 pathways material confirms that the EAL or Learning Support route carries zero French or Spanish. Four years later, Diploma language placement runs off MYP phase: ab initio requires no more than Phase 1, Language B SL sits at Phase 2 to 4 and Language B HL at Phase 4 or 5. A student who never began a third language has fewer routes into a Language B course and a harder path to the Bilingual Diploma, which 30 per cent of ISB's 2025 cohort earned.

Q: What English level does ISB require for the full IB Diploma?

B2 on the Common European Framework before Grade 11 begins, and "ISB's English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers will determine student readiness for the DP as it relates to English fluency." Entry requirements step up by grade: EC1 to Grade 8 accept all levels of English; Grade 9 entry needs at least A2, or B1 if the full Diploma is the goal; Grade 10 entry at A2 is possible but "on the understanding that they will only be allowed to follow a modified IB Diploma Programme in Grade 11", with B2 required for the full Diploma; Grade 11 entry at B1 also means a modified programme. EAL itself runs from EC1 to Grade 12 in three stages, at no additional fee, with places capped in every grade.

A tutor for an International School Basel student costs CHF 95 per 60 minutes for MYP subjects in Grades 6 to 10 and for every Diploma course at Standard Level and Higher Level, including Mathematics AA HL and the Extended Essay, and CHF 85 for a Primary Years learner at Aesch, all-in, with Good Tutors Finder. Getting the school right

What is International School Basel, exactly?

International School Basel is a not-for-profit company registered under Swiss law, trading as International School of the Basel Region AG. It is owned by shareholders, run by a board elected at an annual general meeting, and spread across three campuses in Basel-Landschaft. The tutoring and directory pages we checked in August 2026 got at least one of those three facts wrong; the specific errors are in the corrections table below.

A share company, and who holds the shares

ISB's own governance page states it plainly: "International School of the Basel Region AG (ISBR AG) is a not-for-profit company registered under Swiss law." Its stated purpose is "the operation of an English-speaking private day school for children aged from 3 – 19 years with three levels; Junior School, Middle School and Senior School, on a non-profit and self-supporting basis."

The share register runs to 1,295 registered A, B and C shares. The Association of the International School Basel holds 470 B-shares, or 36.29 per cent. Novartis Pharma AG holds 229 shares (17.68%), F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG 132 (10.19%), Syngenta Crop Protection AG 121 (9.34%), the Bank for International Settlements 60 (4.63%) and BASF Schweiz 55 (4.25%). This is a school part-owned by the Basel pharmaceutical and chemical industry.

Who runs it

The board is "composed of 5 – 11 members, who are elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) by the shareholders." For 2025/26 the Chair is Philippe Waty of Novartis AG and the Director is Bradley Roberts. The three principals are Ian Hoke (Senior School), Siân Thomas (Middle School) and Michelle Phillips (Junior School), with Balázs Szegedi as Director of Operations.

The Annual Report 2024/25 records a net surplus of CHF 0.4m and states that "ISBR AG currently has no interest-bearing liabilities – this is the lowest level since the Reinach campus was built in 2002", on an average staff of 234.7 full-time equivalents. The place of jurisdiction for fee disputes is Arlesheim, Baselland — a small detail that tells you which canton you are actually dealing with.

From 15 students to about 1,100

ISB was founded in 1979 by Janet Galli; the school "began its first day with 15 students and ended the first academic year with a total of 34 students." The first graduation, in 1992, produced one graduate. It became an IB World School with the Diploma in March 1995, added the MYP in 2001, opened the purpose-built Reinach campus in 2002, was authorised for the PYP in 2003, opened Aesch in 2007 and launched its English-German Dual Language Programme in 2022.

The headcount, and why three numbers circulate

The School Profile 2025/26 gives 1,132 students at the start of the year, of whom 501 are in the Senior School and 126 are seniors, drawn from "over 55 countries". The Annual Report 2024/25 gives 1,231 in June 2025 against 1,275 in June 2024, with a year-average of 1,215 — 3.0 per cent down. Both are correct; they count on different dates. Directory sites quoting 1,250 or 1,420 are quoting neither.

ISB is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges — that is the whole accreditation list. The Council of International Schools appears under memberships, not accreditations, alongside SGIS, ECIS, AAIE, AMIS, the College Board and ABRSM. ISB's codes, for anyone filling in a university form: CEEB 796012, IB school code 0828, UCAS 48187.

PYP, MYP and the Diploma

Which IB programmes does ISB run?

Three, and only three: the Primary Years Programme from EC1 to Grade 5, the Middle Years Programme across Grades 6 to 10, and the Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12. There is no IGCSE at ISB, no A Level, no Advanced Placement and no IB Career-related Programme. Grade 9 and Grade 10 are MYP years, not IGCSE years, and this is the single most common mistake made about the school.

PYP, EC1 to Grade 5, at Aesch. Ages 3 to 11, six transdisciplinary themes, homeroom teachers delivering English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, with specialists for the Arts, German, Music and Physical and Health Education. Two pathways run side by side: the English Programme with German as a second language, and the Dual Language Programme, where "teachers divide their time equally between the two languages, ensuring that students receive 50% of their instruction in English and 50% in German", with two core teachers per class and alternating A and B language weeks.
MYP, Grades 6 to 10, across all three campuses. Grade 6 at Aesch, Grades 7 and 8 at Fiechten, Grades 9 and 10 at Reinach. Eight subject groups as ISB lists them, including Sciences as Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Mathematics as Extended or Standard, and Design as Digital, Product or Robotics. German is mandatory in Grades 6 to 8.
DP, Grades 11 and 12, at Reinach. Six options rather than six groups, at least 24 points to earn the Diploma, and a core of Theory of Knowledge, Creativity Activity Service, and the Extended Essay. No more than three Higher Level courses may be selected, with exceptions allowed where a student is required to take English B HL or wishes to take German B HL.
Alongside all of it, the ISB High School Diploma. "All ISB students work toward the ISB High School Diploma, which requires at least 22 credits across Grades 9–12", with a service commitment and PE. Twelve of those credits must be earned by the end of Grade 10. Grades are unweighted, students are not ranked, no GPA is reported, and everything is assessed on the IB's 1 to 7 scale.

The Diploma is not the only route

ISB publishes three alternatives to the full Diploma. Students may take IB Diploma Courses: ISB's 2026–2028 course document says only that students "can select courses from each of the options without having to take 3 HL courses". ISB publishes no current wording on what else the Courses route requires — ask the DP Coordinator. They may combine those with ISB Courses in a customised Grade 11–12 pathway. And every student, Diploma or not, works towards the ISB High School Diploma. In 2026, six students took Diploma Courses across 34 individual courses. Our IB tutoring page covers both routes.

No MYP eAssessment, no MYP Certificate

ISB is explicit: "Two external examinations take place at International School Basel each year: IB Diploma exams and Measuring Academic Progress (MAP) tests." The Grade 6–10 Curriculum Guide of June 2024 describes MYP assessment purely as school-based and criterion-related — "assessed against specified criteria, which are established before the work is undertaken". The first external IB examination an ISB student ever sits is in Grade 12. That changes what MYP tutoring is for: not exam technique, but the criteria and the habits. See MYP tutoring.

What the load actually looks like

Grades 6 to 8 run 30.5 periods of 65 minutes per five-day cycle, plus Z-Block on Wednesdays from 13:40 to 15:05. Grade 9 runs 36 periods of 55 minutes; Grade 10 runs 38. ISB's own homework guidance is up to 60 minutes an evening in Grades 6 and 7, up to 75 in Grades 8 and 9, and up to 90 minutes in Grade 10 — the same year as the Personal Project and the course choices. If you are looking for the year a family runs out of evenings, that is it.

How does Grade 9 mathematics decide Grade 12?

In Grade 9, ISB guides students towards either Standard or Extended MYP mathematics. In Grade 10, teacher recommendations and mid-year report criteria decide which Diploma courses a student may select. Because ISB's only Higher Level mathematics course is Analysis and Approaches HL, and because ETH Zürich and EPFL expect HL Mathematics, a placement made at fourteen constrains an application made at eighteen.

Where the split happens

ISB's mathematics documentation describes a single track from EC1 to Grade 8 and then two: "In Grade 9 - 10 students are guided towards either the Standard or the Extended Mathematics programmes." The current Grade 6–10 Curriculum Guide lists the subject group simply as "Mathematics (Extended, Standard)", and ISB's Mathematics Continuum Guide, dated March 2022, has separate Grade 9–10 Standard and Grade 9–10 Extended chapters — the same guide that is out of date on DP mathematics, as the corrections table below records.

A Grade 8 family choosing to work on mathematics over a summer is not buying a grade. They are buying an option that stays open. This is the most cost-effective tutoring anyone at ISB ever does, and it is bought two to three years before the family feels any urgency. See maths tutoring in Basel.

What ISB requires, in its own words

From the DP Course Selection Requirements document ISB currently links for families: "When selecting courses, we require that students use their current performance in their MYP classes (or equivalent) as a guide. For HL, we require that students are on track to achieve a grade of 5 or higher in the indicative MYP course(s) stipulated below. For SL, a grade of 3 or higher is required."

And on the hardest course in the building: "Mathematics AA HL is a deep and rigorous study of mathematics… In order to give a good chance of success in the course, it is required that students who select this course are on track to achieve a grade of 6 or above in their MYP mathematics course." Five for Higher Level generally. Six for AA HL. Both judged on Grade 10 evidence. AA HL tutoring and AI tutoring are separate assignments here, not one subject.

ISB publishes when the meetings happen, what evidence is used and who sees the recommendations. It also publishes an unusually blunt warning about changing your mind, which is worth reading before January of Grade 10 rather than after.

Who sees the recommendations. "Teacher recommendations will be shared with the Vice Principal for Academics, the DP Coordinator and the team of University Counsellors." Recommendations are provided for every subject a student takes in Grade 10, and "all subject-specific criteria from the Mid-Year Reports for Grade 10 will be considered."
There is no published minimum class size, and that is deliberate. ISB: "Whilst we do not have an established minimum number of students in each course, we attempt to offer a broad range of courses. The viability of a course is considered taking into account a number of factors such as alternative courses in the subject group, staffing and student interest." Its course document adds that "courses cannot run unless a minimum enrolment is attained." No number is published, and we will not invent one.
Two gates that are not about grades at all. "ISB students are expected to maintain a 90% attendance rate throughout the school year… ISB reserves the right to remove students from the Diploma Programme if they are unable to attend school in line with our expectations." And: "All Grade 10 MYP students should engage in and attain a grade of at least a 3 on their Personal Project."
Twelve points across three Higher Levels. ISB's framing of the choice: "As 12 points in HL subjects are needed to obtain the Diploma, students must choose their HL subjects carefully, choosing subjects in which they can eventually achieve an overall grade of 4 or higher."
ISB does not publish an information-evening date, and neither will we. What it publishes is the counsellor window of January to March and the family course-choice meetings in January and February. If your school communication mentions an evening, that date came from ISB directly, not from any public page.

Where the Swiss universities come into it. ISB's own pathway page states the Swiss requirement as a minimum of 32 IB points out of 42 excluding core points, at least three Higher Level subjects including at least one science or mathematics, and a spread across first language, second language, a humanities or social science, a natural science, mathematics and one elective. It then singles out ETH Zürich and EPFL, which "require at least 38 points and specific HL subjects (HL Mathematics, at least one HL Science, plus language requirements)", and notes that "universities usually expect a minimum C1 level in the language of instruction." At ISB, HL Mathematics means AA HL, and AA HL means being on track for a 6 in Grade 10. Around 16 per cent of the Class of 2026 went on to a Swiss university.

All quoted selection rules are from the DP Course Selection Requirements document ISB currently links from its subject-options pages. Its file metadata names the 2024-26 cohort and it was uploaded in October 2024, so it is one cohort behind the 2026-2028 course list — but its rules are internally consistent with that list, and it remains the live linked document as of 11 August 2026. The Standard-versus-Extended split in Grade 9 also appears in an ISB subject guide last edited in July 2019; it is quoted here only because the current June 2024 curriculum guide and the mathematics continuum guide both corroborate it. English as an Additional Language

What does EAL at ISB actually displace?

EAL runs from EC1 to Grade 12 in three stages, at no extra fee, with places capped in every grade. In Grades 6 and 7 it takes the place of the third language: an EAL student studies English and German while their classmates add French or Spanish. That is a language decision made at eleven which reappears at sixteen, when Language B courses and the Bilingual Diploma are chosen.

How EAL is organised, and what it costs

Three stages — Emerging, Developing and Consolidating — with students "placed in groups with their peers and according to their abilities". Every applicant is interviewed by an EAL specialist, and applicants for Grades 6 to 12 also sit a placement test, online or in person.

ISB's wording on capacity and cost, verbatim: "To provide the highest level of support to students acquiring English as an Additional Language Support, ISB limits the number of students enrolled in our EAL program in each Grade. Students in need of EAL support are admitted to the EAL program at the discretion of the School and receive EAL support for as long as deemed appropriate by the school. There are no additional fees payable for EAL support." There is no published maximum duration and no published exit test, and a grade can be waitlisted when its EAL or Learning Support places are full.

The third language that quietly disappears

ISB's language documentation is direct: "In Grade 6 - 7, students in English as an Additional Language or Learning Support will study English and German. All other students in Grades 6 - 7 study an additional language, either French or Spanish." ISB's current Grade 7–8 pathways material sets out three routes, and the EAL or Learning Support route carries zero French or Spanish, against one for students taking a third language and two Arts plus two Design for students taking none.

Four years later, Language B placement runs off MYP phase: ab initio needs "no more than MYP Phase 1", Language B SL sits at "MYP Phase 2 to 4" and Language B HL at "Phase 4 or 5". A student who never started French or Spanish has German and English, and the Bilingual Diploma — which needs two Language A courses, or a subject taught in a second language — becomes much harder to reach. Thirty per cent of ISB's 2025 cohort earned it. Tutoring the third language in Grade 8, once EAL has done its job, is how families keep that door open. See German tutoring and English tutoring.

German is compulsory to Grade 8, then it is not

"English is the main language of instruction across all year groups… German is compulsory from Early Childhood 1 (EC1) to Grade 8." After Grade 8 it becomes an option within the MYP at different levels. Families arriving from abroad often treat the Grade 9 German decision as a free one; in a canton where the host language is German and the University of Basel teaches in it, it is not. ISB also points families at TELC examinations for university or citizenship purposes.

The Dual Language Programme, and where it stops

The PYP Dual Language Programme splits instruction 50/50 between English and German with two core teachers per class. A Middle School version arrives in August 2027 for Grade 6 only, in Individuals and Societies and selected Z-Block time, with Science added for Grade 7 in 2028/29 and up to 40 per cent of learning in German. Entry needs "the equivalent of MYP Phase 4 in German by the start of Grade 6". ISB is clear that "the Dual Language Programme will not extend into the Senior School years — as IB Diploma exams are taken in English."

Learning Support, and its published limits

Three tiers: an Accommodation Plan; Learning Support at 150 to 350 minutes weekly for students a year or more below grade level; and a 1:1 Teacher Assistant at 350+ minutes, which is "subject to a fee of CHF 20,000–60,000 in addition to standard ISB tuition." ISB supports "mild to moderate" needs and caps numbers per grade. Formal evaluations are required within two years of joining and every three years after, and "by the end of Grade 10 all students receiving Learning Support services are required to have an updated evaluation on file in order to apply for accommodations with the IB Organisation and the College Board."

EAL stages, entry levels, capacity wording and Learning Support tiers are from ISB's Admissions and Placement of Students policy, which carries no date on the document itself and is treated here as currently published, together with ISB's student-support and language-learning pages. The Diploma English gate is from the DP Course Selection Requirements. The Grade 6–7 language displacement is quoted from an ISB subject guide last edited July 2019 and is used only because ISB's current Grade 7–8 course-pathways material states the same three routes. Hours are bought prepaid in blocks of 5, 10 or 20. The discount is for paying upfront, not for buying in bulk. Three things worth knowing about tutoring a PYP child at Aesch. Pick-up is 15:00 for EC1 and EC2, 15:10 for EC3 and 15:20 for Grades 1 to 5, and 15:00 for everybody on Wednesdays, so an on-time 15:45 start at home is realistic in a way it never is for a Senior School sibling. ASPIRE after-school care runs on the Aesch campus until 18:00 at CHF 30 a day on trimester registration or CHF 60 as a drop-in, which means a tutoring slot and childcare are not competing for the same hour. And a child in the Dual Language Programme is receiving half their instruction in German — so "help with homework" here is frequently help in two languages at once, which is what we staff for. The rate clock pauses over school holidays, on ISB's calendar rather than the canton's — and at ISB that distinction is not cosmetic. For 2026/27 ISB's autumn break is 5 to 16 October 2026 where Basel-Landschaft's is 28 September to 9 October; ISB's winter break is 14 December to 1 January where the canton's is 21 December to 1 January; and ISB takes one week for Fasnacht, 15 to 19 February 2027, where Basel-Landschaft takes two, 8 to 19 February. Only the spring break lines up, 24 March to 2 April against the canton's 22 March to 2 April. We pause on the calendar your child's school actually keeps.

A worked example, on the ISB calendar. A Grade 10 family buys a Specialist 10-hour package on 5 January 2027, aiming at the mathematics recommendation before the January and February course-choice meetings. The two-month rate window would close on 5 March, except that ISB's Fasnacht break from 15 to 19 February pauses it for that week, carrying it to 12 March. They use six hours. Six hours at the standard CHF 95 is CHF 570, so CHF 240 stays on the account — still there in the autumn of Grade 11, redeemed against the rate on the day. Nothing was taken when the rate window closed. Note that a sibling at a Basel-Landschaft school would have been on holiday from 8 February, a full week earlier: one household, two calendars.

What the price buys

What an ISB-specific tutor does differently

"International school tutor" is not a protected term, and most of what is sold under it is a generic IB tutor with the school's name pasted into a heading. Four things separate an assignment written for this school, and all four are checkable in the first lesson.

They know Grades 9 and 10 are MYP

Not IGCSE. There is no external paper, no tiered entry and no grade boundary to drill towards. The work is criterion-related and school-marked, so a tutor who arrives with past papers has already misread the year.

They work backwards from the course list

Three maths courses, not four. English B at HL only. Computer Science reached through Robotics. A tutor who plans a Grade 10 year without knowing which Diploma doors it opens at this school is planning in the abstract.

They know when the school day ends

15:50 at Reinach and Fiechten, 15:05 on Wednesdays, 15:00 to 15:20 at Aesch. Scheduling is half of whether tutoring survives a term, and the three campuses do not finish at the same time.

They hold the line on authorship

The Personal Project, the internal assessments and the Extended Essay have to be the student's own work. A tutor who edits a paragraph into shape is not being generous; they are creating a problem the school will have to deal with.

Academic honesty, stated plainly

What may a tutor do on an Extended Essay?

Teach, question, model and give feedback. Not draft, not rewrite, not produce. The IB requires students "to produce genuine and authentic pieces of work, that represent their own abilities", and names the submission of third-party work as misconduct. That boundary applies to the Extended Essay, to every internal assessment, and to the Grade 10 Personal Project.

The rule we work to, and whose rule it is

The IB defines academic integrity as "a principle in education and a choice to act in a responsible way so others can trust us", and academic misconduct as "an act by a student that infringes IB rules and regulations, and potentially threatens the integrity of IB examinations and assessments". It names specifically "authenticating and submitting to the IB work produced by third parties, including parents and unauthorized internet services, as the student's", and it warns schools against "overediting or creating coursework submitted by students".

So the working line in every one of our sessions is: the student writes the research question, does the analysis and draws the conclusion. A tutor may explain the criteria, ask the questions a supervisor would ask, model an analysis on a different dataset, and say honestly that a paragraph is not yet clear. A tutor may not write it clearer. Extended Essay tutoring, internal assessment tutoring and TOK essay coaching are all sold on that basis.

What ISB itself says about private tutoring

Almost nothing, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. ISB does not publish a Parent Handbook, a Student Handbook or an academic-honesty policy on its public website. Its published policy set is the Child Protection Policy, the Code of Conduct, the Admissions Policy, the Financial Regulations, Vision 2030 and the ISB Assessment Beliefs. The Code of Conduct, updated January 2021, covers discrimination, harassment and bullying and says nothing about tutoring or academic honesty. The Assessment Beliefs document that ISB's admissions FAQ names as governing all assessment practice is dated May 2017.

Any tutoring page that quotes "ISB's academic honesty policy" at you is quoting a document that is not public. What ISB does publish is two things: it requires a private tutor for one of its own Diploma courses — "School supported self-taught Language A: Literature SL (with tutor - extra cost)" — and it hosts a commercial supplementary-mathematics provider on the Aesch campus while stating clearly that "the Kumon methods are not integrated into or endorsed by the ISB Mathematics curriculum" and that families "register directly with Kumon". Outside academic help, at parent cost, contracted directly, filed by the school under "Academic Support". That is the closest thing to a published position — but Kumon is an activity ISB itself contracts, not an independent tutor, so it is not evidence of any ISB policy on private tutoring. ISB publishes none.

In-school support is 30 minutes, twice a week

The Senior School timetable for 2026/27 puts Academic Support on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 09:50 to 10:20. That is the whole of the timetabled catch-up provision for Grades 9 to 12, and it is one hour a week shared across every subject. It is not a criticism of the school — it is simply the shape of the day, and it is why families buy hours.

The one thing we will never claim

No relationship with ISB. We are not recommended by the school, not on any approved list, not on campus, and not in contact with its teachers unless you ask us to be and arrange it yourself. Anyone selling you access to an ISB teacher is selling you something they should not. We describe a tutor as an examiner or an international-school teacher only where that is verified on the roster for that assignment.

Where the school draws its own line

ISB treats persistent difficulty as a course-level question rather than a support one: "students must choose their HL subjects carefully, choosing subjects in which they can eventually achieve an overall grade of 4 or higher", and a Grade 10 entrant admitted at A2 English "will only be allowed to follow a modified IB Diploma Programme in Grade 11". Tutoring is often the thing that keeps a subject at Higher Level rather than the thing that rescues it afterwards, and the sensible time to buy it is before the January meetings.

Academic-integrity wording is quoted from the IB's own published pages on student responsibilities and academic-integrity concerns, not from any ISB document. The finding that ISB publishes no handbook and no academic-honesty policy is the result of a full crawl of its public site and every linked PDF on 11 August 2026; ISB's own site search sits behind Cloudflare and could not be queried, so the correct reading is "not published publicly", not "does not exist". The Kumon wording, the self-taught Language A note and the Academic Support timings are quoted from ISB's activities page, its Diploma Programme page and its Senior School schedule for 2026/27.

Results and fees

What are ISB's results and fees in 2026?

In 2026, 118 ISB students took the full Diploma, 98 per cent passed, the average was 35.2 points and 21 per cent scored 40 or more. The IB's global average for the same May 2026 session was 30.88 points across 209,607 candidates. Tuition for 2026/27 runs from CHF 14,390 for EC1 at five mornings to CHF 38,000 in Grades 11 and 12.

The comparison, sourced on both sides

ISB reports its 2026 cohort as 124 students completing IB assessment: 118 full-Diploma candidates and six taking Diploma Courses, the latter across 34 individual courses at an average of 4.5 points per course. One hundred and twenty-six graduates crossed the stage at the Stadtcasino Basel on 30 May 2026.

On the other side of the comparison, the IB's release of 6 July 2026 states that 209,607 students received Diploma and Career-related Programme results and that "the global average DP score for the May 2026 session is 30.88 points." That release does not publish a global pass rate, so the "world average of around 81%" that appears alongside ISB's 2026 figures is ISB's own statement, not the IB's. The 81 per cent in the table above is the worldwide 2025 figure, which ISB publishes in its School Profile. Small distinctions, but they are exactly the ones that get copied wrongly.

Where the graduates actually go

Class of 2025 placement, from the School Profile: United Kingdom 29 per cent, Netherlands 20 per cent, other Europe 20 per cent, Switzerland 8 per cent, United States 6 per cent, Canada 2 per cent, India 1 per cent, with 85 per cent going straight to university and 15 per cent taking a gap year. For the Class of 2024 it was the UK on 36 per cent and the Netherlands on 29. ISB's own summary: "Switzerland has been the third most popular destination among our graduates in the past few years, after the UK and the Netherlands."

The most-matriculated institutions from 2022 to 2025 are King's College London and Groningen on twelve each, University College London on eleven, Bath on ten, and Erasmus Rotterdam, Manchester and the University of Basel on nine. What tuition does not cover

ISB lists the exclusions explicitly: additional textbooks; field trips, camps and excursions; external examinations, meaning the IB, and their associated costs; IB DP online courses; psycho-educational evaluations; the extra-curricular programme; a 1:1 Teacher Assistant; speech and language therapy and evaluations; and meals. A first-year Grade 11 entrant is therefore looking at CHF 38,000 plus CHF 4,500, before IB examination fees.

The smaller numbers that still bite

A Waiting List Fee of CHF 1,000 per student, held as a deposit and refunded if no place appears within eight months. Family discounts of CHF 1,000 for a second child, CHF 2,000 for a third and CHF 4,000 from the fourth. Monthly instalments carry a 2 per cent annual administration fee; late payment is 2 per cent a month or CHF 50, whichever is greater. Withdrawing after re-enrolment costs CHF 3,000 between 1 April and 31 May 2026, and CHF 5,000 between 1 June and 15 July 2026, per the 2026/27 Financial Regulations.

Class sizes, for context

ISB publishes maxima rather than averages: up to 16 in EC1, up to 20 in EC2 and EC3, up to 22 in Grades 1 to 5, and up to 24 in Grades 6 to 12. Twenty-four is a normal international-school class and a perfectly good one; it is also the reason a Grade 10 student who has quietly lost the thread in one subject can stay lost for a semester. That is the gap an hour a week is actually filling.

Every correction in the table was checked against a named, dated ISB document on 11 August 2026: the recognitions page, the campuses and directions pages, the academic-results page, the School Profile 2025/26, the Annual Report 2024/25, the Financial Regulations 2026/27 of November 2025, and the DP Course Choices 2026-2028. Third-party pages are described rather than named where they are commercial. Where ISB's own older documents are the source of an error, this page says so rather than blaming somebody else: a 2019 or 2022 PDF still served on the school's website is evidence that a subject exists, not evidence of how it is structured today.

Why does the ISB calendar catch families out?

Because it does not match the canton's. ISB sets its own dates, and for 2026/27 its autumn break starts a week after Basel-Landschaft's, its winter break starts a week earlier, and it takes one week for Fasnacht where the canton takes two. A family with one child at ISB and one at a cantonal school is running two calendars from October onwards.

The dates a tutoring plan should be built around

Parent-teacher-student conferences for EC1 to Grade 12 fall on 10 and 11 November 2026. Grade 12 conferences are on the afternoon of 10 February 2027; Grades 6 to 11 on the afternoon of 22 March 2027, with EC1 to Grade 11 on 23 March. Graduation is 29 May 2027. Specific conference times are not published in advance — ISB's calendar says only that they "will be published at a later date". No examination or mock weeks are marked anywhere on the published calendar, and we will not invent any.

How a tutor actually reaches the campuses

All three campuses sit on BLT tram 11, which runs every seven to eight minutes on weekdays: Arlesheimerstrasse for Aesch, Reinach Süd for Fiechten, Reinacherhof for Reinach. Fiechten is one tram stop north of Aesch. There is no ISB school bus — the school promotes the tram, walking, cycling and a "Travel Together" carpooling platform, and no bus charge appears anywhere in its fee schedule. Worth planning around: every ISB stop sits on that single line, and the two Reinach campuses are a walk from it rather than at it — Fiechten in particular is a walk along Fiechtenweg from Reinach Süd, and cars are not permitted onto Fiechtenweg or Zihlackerstrasse. We build that journey time in rather than arriving late and apologising.

The realistic weekday slot

Senior School classes end at 15:50 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and at 15:05 on Wednesday; the Reinach campus stays open until 18:00. Fiechten also finishes at 15:50 but closes at 17:00. Aesch pick-up is 15:00 to 15:20, with ASPIRE care until 18:00. So: 16:00 onwards on most weekdays for a secondary student, from about 15:30 on Wednesdays, and from 15:45 for a Junior School child. Grade 10 homework alone is up to 90 minutes an evening, so the slot has to be real, not aspirational.

Where the marketplaces genuinely win

If your child needs someone to sit beside them and keep them working, and the curriculum itself is not the problem, a CHF 25 marketplace tutor in Reinach is the right answer and we will say so on the phone. One Swiss marketplace lists local tutors from about CHF 15 to CHF 35 an hour. We are not a better version of that. We are a different thing, and it is only worth CHF 95 when the structure of the programme is the difficulty — an MYP criterion, a Grade 10 recommendation, an internal assessment.

The question to ask any provider

"What qualification does an ISB student take in Grade 10, and how many Diploma mathematics courses does the school run?" The answers are "the MYP, with no external examination" and "three". A provider who says IGCSE, or who says four, has not read a single ISB document — and it is a thirty-second test that is worth applying to us as readily as to anyone else. Our full price grid is published, with no fee added at checkout.

Competitor rates are as published on each provider's own website in August 2026 and converted to CHF per 60 minutes where the provider states a different unit. One international agency publishes in pounds sterling only; no conversion is attempted here, so it is not in the table. Three marketplace pages were unreachable at the time of checking and are likewise excluded rather than estimated. Providers are described by what they publish rather than named, which is the convention across this site.

How much does a tutor for an ISB student cost?

CHF 95 per 60 minutes for MYP subjects in Grades 6 to 10 and for every Diploma course at Standard Level and Higher Level, including Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL and the Extended Essay, and CHF 85 for a Primary Years learner at Aesch, all-in, with Good Tutors Finder. Prepaid packages lower it: ten hours are CHF 810, which is CHF 81 an hour. Distinction at CHF 130, or CHF 1,110 for ten hours, is our most accomplished tutors and you can choose it on any of it. There is no enrolment fee, no travel surcharge into Reinach or Aesch, and no difference in price between a lesson at your table and a lesson online. For comparison, the one agency that names ISB on its Basel page publishes CHF 70 to 130 online and CHF 100 to 160 in person, plus a one-off CHF 100 enrolment fee per family.

What does International School Basel cost in 2026/27?

Annual tuition is CHF 14,390 for EC1 at five mornings, rising to CHF 23,980 for EC1 at five full days and for EC2, CHF 28,210 for EC3 to Grade 5, CHF 32,280 for Grades 6 to 8, CHF 33,650 for Grades 9 and 10, and CHF 38,000 for Grades 11 and 12. A one-off, non-refundable Development Fee of CHF 4,500 is due for every new student when a place is offered, so a first-year Grade 11 entrant is looking at CHF 42,500 before IB examination fees. Those fees are not included, and nor are field trips, meals, IB Diploma online courses, psycho-educational evaluations or a 1:1 Teacher Assistant. Family discounts run from CHF 1,000 for a second child to CHF 4,000 from a fourth. Figures are from ISB's Financial Regulations 2026/27, dated November 2025.

Which ISB campus will my child be at, and which grades are where?

Three campuses, all in canton Basel-Landschaft rather than Basel-Stadt, and all on BLT tram 11. Aesch, at Arlesheimerstrasse 7 in 4147 Aesch, takes EC1 to Grade 6 — the Junior School and the PYP, plus the first MYP year. Fiechten, at Fiechtenweg 72 in 4153 Reinach, takes Grades 7 and 8 and is one tram stop north of Aesch. Reinach, at Fleischbachstrasse 2 in 4153 Reinach, takes Grades 9 to 12, so it houses both the last two MYP years and the whole Diploma Programme. The detail directories most often get wrong: Grade 6 sits at Aesch, not at the Middle School campus, even though it is already in the MYP and pays Middle School fees.

Does ISB offer IGCSE or A Levels?

No. ISB is authorised for three International Baccalaureate programmes and nothing else: the Diploma from 1995, the MYP from 2001 and the PYP from 2003. Grades 9 and 10 are the final two MYP years, not IGCSE years, so there is no tiered entry, no external paper and no grade boundary in those years. There is no A Level provision, no Advanced Placement and no IB Career-related Programme either. ISB is a College Board authorised SAT and PSAT test centre, which is a testing authorisation rather than a curriculum, and an official ABRSM music examination centre. A tutoring page that lists ISB under an IGCSE or A Level heading has not checked the school's own recognitions page.

Which Diploma mathematics courses does ISB actually run?

Three: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level, and Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level. ISB does not offer Applications and Interpretation HL, and states the three-course list twice in its current documents. The confusion is understandable, because ISB's own Mathematics Continuum Guide of March 2022 still contains an AI HL chapter and is still online. Why it matters: ISB's pathway page notes that ETH Zürich and EPFL require at least 38 points and specific Higher Level subjects including HL Mathematics. At this school, HL Mathematics means AA HL, so there is no lighter Higher Level route to those two universities.

What MYP grade does my child need for Higher Level at ISB?

ISB's published rule is a 5. Its course-selection document states: "For HL, we require that students are on track to achieve a grade of 5 or higher in the indicative MYP course(s) stipulated below. For SL, a grade of 3 or higher is required." Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL is stricter — "it is required that students who select this course are on track to achieve a grade of 6 or above in their MYP mathematics course." The evidence used is the Grade 10 mid-year report, and teacher recommendations are shared with the Vice Principal for Academics, the DP Coordinator and the University Counsellors. Separately, students should attain at least a 3 on the Personal Project and are expected to maintain 90 per cent attendance.

When are Grade 11 subject choices made, and can we change later?

All Grade 10 students meet the University Counsellors between January and March of Grade 10, and teacher recommendations are discussed with families at course-choice meetings in January and February. ISB is then unusually direct about changing your mind: "Most likely, changes to original course choices will not be possible after the deadline communicated by the school." Late changes depend on "availability of places in the subject being selected (very limited)" and on "meeting the entry requirements for that subject", and the school closes with "students must not assume they can simply change at a later stage." ISB does not publish a minimum class size, saying instead that course viability depends on staffing, student interest and alternatives in the subject group.

Does ISB run MYP eAssessment or award an MYP Certificate?

No. ISB states that "Two external examinations take place at International School Basel each year: IB Diploma exams and Measuring Academic Progress (MAP) tests." Its Grade 6–10 Curriculum Guide of June 2024 describes MYP assessment purely as school-based and criterion-related, work being "assessed against specified criteria, which are established before the work is undertaken". There is no on-screen examination and no MYP Certificate. The practical consequence is that the first external IB examination an ISB student ever sits is in Grade 12, which changes what useful MYP tutoring looks like: understanding the criteria and building the working habits, rather than drilling past papers that do not exist.

What happens to my child's third language if they need EAL?

In Grades 6 and 7 they lose it. ISB's language documentation states that "students in English as an Additional Language or Learning Support will study English and German. All other students in Grades 6 - 7 study an additional language, either French or Spanish", and its current Grade 7–8 pathways material confirms that the EAL or Learning Support route carries zero French or Spanish. Four years later, Diploma language placement runs off MYP phase: ab initio requires no more than Phase 1, Language B SL sits at Phase 2 to 4 and Language B HL at Phase 4 or 5. A student who never began a third language has fewer routes into a Language B course and a harder path to the Bilingual Diploma, which 30 per cent of ISB's 2025 cohort earned.

What English level does ISB require for the full IB Diploma?

B2 on the Common European Framework before Grade 11 begins, and "ISB's English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers will determine student readiness for the DP as it relates to English fluency." Entry requirements step up by grade: EC1 to Grade 8 accept all levels of English; Grade 9 entry needs at least A2, or B1 if the full Diploma is the goal; Grade 10 entry at A2 is possible but "on the understanding that they will only be allowed to follow a modified IB Diploma Programme in Grade 11", with B2 required for the full Diploma; Grade 11 entry at B1 also means a modified programme. EAL itself runs from EC1 to Grade 12 in three stages, at no additional fee, with places capped in every grade.

What were ISB's most recent IB Diploma results?

In 2026, 124 ISB students completed IB assessment. Of the 118 who took the full Diploma, 98 per cent passed, the average was 35.2 points out of 45, and 21 per cent scored 40 or more. Six students took Diploma Courses across 34 individual courses, averaging 4.5 points per course, and 126 graduates crossed the stage at the Stadtcasino Basel on 30 May 2026. For context from the IB's own release of 6 July 2026, 209,607 candidates worldwide received results and the global average score for the May 2026 session was 30.88 points. Be careful of one live page on ISB's own website that still shows 2019/20 figures — 97 per cent and 34 points — from a non-examined COVID cohort.

Can a tutor help with the Extended Essay, an internal assessment or the Personal Project?

Yes, within a boundary we take seriously. A tutor may teach the underlying skills, explain the assessment criteria, ask the questions a supervisor would ask, model a technique on different material and say honestly where an argument is not yet clear. A tutor may not write, redraft or produce any part of the work. The IB requires students "to produce genuine and authentic pieces of work, that represent their own abilities", and names as academic misconduct "authenticating and submitting to the IB work produced by third parties, including parents and unauthorized internet services, as the student's". It also warns against "overediting or creating coursework submitted by students". ISB does not publish its own academic-honesty policy, so the IB's wording is the standard we work to.
