An IGCSE tutor in Zurich works on the quieter of the city's international curricula, and that is exactly why it is worth getting right. International School Zurich North in Wallisellen runs IGCSE and then AS and A-Level; a good many Zurich families sit Cambridge papers privately or arrive mid-course from a British-system school abroad. The decision that matters most is the tier — Core or Extended — because it sets the highest grade the paper can award.
IGCSE is CHF 95 an hour, all-in, per 60 minutes. Core, Extended and Additional Mathematics all sit at the same rate.

The decision that matters
Core or Extended — the tier sets the ceiling
Almost everything else about IGCSE tutoring is ordinary teaching. This one is a decision, it is taken early, and it is reversible only up to a point.
They are different papers, not different difficulties
Core and Extended cover overlapping but different content and are marked on different scales. A candidate entered for Core cannot be awarded the top grades, whatever they write.
The entry is made months before the exam
Schools decide on the evidence they have at the time, which is usually mid-course. A child who has moved school, changed board or simply found their feet late can be entered on a picture that is already out of date.
Extended carries real risk as well as real reward
It is not always the right answer. A candidate who is comfortably at the top of Core and unstable at the bottom of Extended can end up with a worse grade, and that is a judgement worth making honestly rather than optimistically.

How it works
How do you get a tutor in Zurich?
Three steps, and the first takes two minutes. You book online yourself — we will never put a charge through on your behalf.
- Tell us three things. Your child's age, the school and year group, and the date you are working towards. Those set the tier, the pack size and the urgency. Nobody else asks about the date.
- We assign a tutor in 48 to 72 hours, chosen on subject, curriculum, level and availability, then confirmed with you on WhatsApp. If the fit is wrong we reassign at no cost.
- Start with one hour, not a leap. The first hour is charged at the standard rate for the tier — CHF 85, CHF 95 or CHF 130. Buy a package afterwards and that amount comes straight off it, so the hour you have already had is re-priced at the package rate too.
- Lessons at home or online, priced the same. Tutors travel across the canton, from the city out to Winterthur and the Oberland; online covers the rest of Switzerland and the weeks your family is away.

How long you have
A full year to use your package. Your best rate held for up to three months.
There are two clocks and they do different things. The short one protects the rate you paid. The long one is how long the value stays on your account. Most of this market publishes neither.
- The rate clock pauses over your commune's school holidays, automatically, on the cantonal calendar rather than a generic Swiss one. The dates are in the table below, and they are not Zurich's.
- One free one-month extension on the rate window, for the asking, up to 30 days before it closes. Auto-approved, and we offer it before you have to ask.
- When the rate window closes, nothing is taken. The hours you have already had are recalculated at the standard rate, and the balance stays on your account for the rest of the twelve months, used against the price at the time.
- You will hear from us long before the year is up. A reminder at nine months, another at eleven. A balance still unused after twelve months closes — but it should never come as a surprise, and it never has to happen.
Which calendar your rate clock follows. In canton Zurich each commune sets its own Volksschule holidays; only the start of the year and the Christmas break are binding canton-wide, and the Bildungsdirektion sets the Mittelschule dates centrally with the sports holidays split into three regional windows. You do not have to buy a package to meet a tutor
Take one hour at the standard rate — CHF 85, CHF 95 or CHF 130 depending on the tier. If you carry on, that amount comes off your package in full, so the hour you have already had is re-priced at the package rate along with the rest. There is no cheaper way in and no penalty for starting small.

Where the money goes
What CHF 95 an hour buys on a Cambridge course
Cambridge is a smaller pool in Zurich than the IB, and that changes what is worth paying for.
A tutor who has taught that specification
Cambridge publishes syllabus codes for a reason: the same subject name can be a different specification with different papers and different set content. A tutor who has taught the code your child is entered for is a different proposition from one who has taught "IGCSE physics".
Honest advice on the tier
Before you buy hours, not after. We have no commercial reason to push a family towards Extended, and where we think Core is the right entry we say so.
Syllabus mapping on arrival
The commonest Cambridge situation in Zurich is a family arriving mid-course. Working out what actually transfers between boards is the first hour's work, and it saves the next ten.
A first lesson you cannot lose on
If the first lesson on your package is not right, you choose: the whole package refunded to your card including that hour, or a different tutor with the hour credited back. We never choose for you.

What happens if it isn't right?
The strongest thing we can tell you about a first lesson is what happens if it disappoints you. When it does, you choose which of the first two applies — we do not choose for you.

If the first lesson on your package does not meet your expectations for tutor knowledge or professionalism, we refund the whole package to your card — including the hour you had. No questions, no conditions, nothing to argue about.

Fourteen days to change your mind
Bought a package and had second thoughts before starting? A full refund to your card within 14 days, provided no lesson has been taken. Switzerland gives no statutory right of withdrawal online — this one is ours, voluntarily.
Free cancellation until 17:00
Cancel or reschedule until 17:00 the day before and the hour is not deducted from your package. Children get ill and school trips move; that is not something to be charged for. No minimum term — stop whenever you like — and no enrolment fee.

What is the difference between Core and Extended, and does it matter?
It matters a great deal. Core and Extended are different papers with different content and different grade ceilings: a candidate entered for Core cannot be awarded the top grades however well they perform. Extended is harder and carries the risk of a lower grade if it goes badly. Schools enter candidates on a judgement made months before the exam, and that judgement is worth questioning if the picture has changed. We will say plainly what we think, and we do not have a commercial reason to push you either way.
Which schools in Zurich teach IGCSE?
International School Zurich North in Wallisellen is the Cambridge school in the canton, running IGCSE in the secondary school and AS and A-Level after it, with IB Primary Years lower down. Institut Montana Zugerberg, in neighbouring canton Zug, runs Cambridge IGCSE in Grades 9 and 10 before the IB Diploma. Beyond those, plenty of Zurich families are sitting Cambridge papers because they arrived from a British-system school and are continuing the course.
Do you tutor Additional Mathematics?
Yes. Additional Mathematics is a separate Cambridge qualification rather than a harder version of IGCSE Mathematics, and it exists mainly to bridge into A-Level or the IB Diploma. It is the single most common Cambridge subject we are asked for in Zurich, usually by a family whose child is heading for Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and has been told the jump is steep.
When are the exams and when should we start?
The main Cambridge series runs in the summer, and schools make their final entries well before it — which is why the tier decision has effectively been taken by late winter. We are not going to print a date we have not verified: ask your school for the exact timetable and entry deadline for your child's series, and tell us the date when you enquire. What we can say is that a family working through the autumn has a materially different spring from one starting in March.
What comes after IGCSE in Zurich?
Three routes, and they pull in different directions. A-Level at International School Zurich North. The IB Diploma at Zurich International School, Inter-Community School or Swiss International School. Or a move into the Swiss system, which means the Matura and, for most Zurich schools, working in German. We tutor all three, and if you are choosing between them the comparison page is a better starting point than a sales conversation.
