IB Tutors in Basel — the Sciences

4.9rated by families in Switzerland · from 1,756 client reviews

Basel is the one Swiss city where Higher Level Chemistry, Biology and Physics are the ordinary request.

Life sciences generate around 40 per cent of this canton's value added from about 10 per cent of its jobs, and the children of those laboratories sit Group 4 papers. Standard Level, Higher Level and MYP from CHF 95; Distinction, our most accomplished tutors, CHF 130 whenever you choose it, all-in, per 60 minutes, same price at your table or online.

Getting the schools right

Where the IB is actually taught in the Basel region

Most pages that rank for this query list four or five Basel schools under an "IB, IGCSE and A Level" heading without distinguishing between them. Three of those schools do not teach the IB at all. Here is the accurate version.

SchoolIB?What it actually runs
International School Basel
Aesch, Fiechten and Reinach BL
PYP · MYP · DPThe region's only English-language three-programme IB World School, and not-for-profit. Roughly 1,200 students, 60-plus nationalities, 65-plus IB courses. Senior campus at Fleischbachstrasse 2, Reinach — tram 11 to Reinacherhof. Does not award a Swiss Matura.
Gymnasium am Münsterplatz
Basel-Stadt
DP, in grades 12–13An IB World School since May 2011. Because it is a state school, the IB Diploma may only be followed in addition to the cantonal Matura. Six IB subjects: German, English, French, History or Geography, Biology and Mathematics. Exams in May; exam fees around CHF 1,600.
SIS Swiss International School BaselDPA two-year Diploma in the final two years of the Bilingual College, awarded alongside a bilingual Hausmatura. Three entry pathways: bilingual German–English at C1 in both, English-focused at C1 English and B2 German, or German ab initio.
Academia International School BaselNo IBCambridge IGCSE after two years and International A Levels after four. A perfectly good school — but if you have been sold "IB tutoring" for it, the curriculum is wrong.
ELA Basel — Swiss British SchoolNo IBThe Cambridge curriculum or the Swiss Lehrplan 21, from three months to eighteen years.
Gymnasium Bäumlihof
Basel-Stadt
DP, integratedIts own site describes a full Diploma Programme, integrated into the four-year Gymnasium as a "GBplus" class, with German A HL, English B HL, French B HL, Biology SL, Maths SL, History SL, TOK, CAS and the Extended Essay — alongside the Swiss Matura. Note that the cantonal page lists only Münsterplatz for the IB; the school's own page says otherwise, and we follow the school.
Gymnasium Leonhard, Kirschgarten, WirtschaftsgymnasiumNo IBSwiss Matura, with a bilingual German–English Matura available at all five Basel-Stadt Gymnasien — which is not the IB Diploma and is frequently confused with it. Kirschgarten runs a Schwerpunktfach in Biology and Chemistry.
UWC Robert Bosch College, Freiburg (DE)DP, boarding onlyAbout 70 km away, English-language, boarding only, roughly 200 students aged 16–19 from some 90 nationalities. We have found no IB World School in Lörrach, Saint-Louis or Mulhouse.

The Münsterplatz problem nobody writes about

Gymnasium am Münsterplatz offers Biology as its only IB science. There is no IB Chemistry and no IB Physics on its list. A Münsterplatz student who wants Chemistry HL or Physics HL cannot take it at their own school — and a Münsterplatz student doing IB Biology is doing it in a second language, in grades 12 and 13, on top of a full Matura workload. That is a genuinely hard piece of work and it is invisible on every competitor page we could find.

?

Two routes at Münsterplatz, not one

Option 1 is the full IB Diploma. Option 2 is bilingualism across five subjects without aiming for the Diploma, completing IB Certificates in English and French — both compulsory — and optionally German. The school states that no special prior knowledge of English is required to start. Families frequently do not realise there is a choice, or that the second route still produces IB Certificates.

Why the demand looks like this

Ten per cent of the jobs, forty per cent of the value

This is not colour. It is the reason a Basel IB cohort skews to Group 4 in a way a Geneva or Lausanne cohort does not, and it is the reason we staff the sciences here first.

40%

Of cantonal value added

Life sciences contribute around 40 per cent of Basel-Stadt's value added from a roughly 10 per cent share of its approximately 200,000 jobs, on the canton's own 2024 figures.

800+

Companies in the cluster

More than 800 firms form the Basel Area Life Sciences supercluster. Over 94 per cent of Basel-Stadt's goods exports are chemical and pharmaceutical.

5,000

R&D staff at one employer

Novartis reports approximately 5,000 R&D staff in Basel alone and around 7,000 people on its Basel campus. Roche reports employees from more than 115 nations at its Basel and Kaiseraugst site.

38.7%

Foreign residents

From 173 nationalities, alongside roughly 34,800 international commuters. Around 13.7 per cent of Basel speaks English at home and 39.2 per cent use English as their main language at work.

What that means for a tutoring assignment

A Basel Group 4 request is usually not "help with science". It is one of a small number of specific, recurring problems, and naming which one saves a family two sessions.

  • The scientific investigation. The current IB sciences internal assessment runs to a maximum of 3,000 words, is allocated 10 hours of the taught course, and is worth 20 per cent of the subject grade — identically at Standard and Higher Level. It carries 24 marks across four equally weighted criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Your teacher may comment on one draft, and one only.
  • The Collaborative Sciences Project. At least 10 hours, involving every student taking a DP sciences subject, and not assessed — students submit a 100-word reflection. Families are often surprised how much time it takes for something that carries no marks.
  • Command terms. Analyse, evaluate, discuss, justify, to what extent. Whole bands are lost to answering the wrong verb, and it is teachable in an hour.
  • Group 4 is compulsory. Every Diploma student takes at least one science, and Environmental Systems and Societies satisfies both Group 3 and Group 4 at once — a real timetable lever that few families are shown.
A student in Basel working through an IB science internal assessment with a tutor on a video call

We cannot verify, and therefore do not claim, that ISB's parent body is disproportionately employed in pharma — ISB publishes nothing on parent employers. Nor does Gymnasium Kirschgarten link its Biology and Chemistry Schwerpunktfach to the industry. The economic figures stand on their own; the inference is yours.

One specific thing worth knowing

The largest agency in this market does not list Basel for face-to-face IB Biology

Its IB Chemistry page names Geneva, Lausanne, Basel, Zurich and Zug for face-to-face tuition. Its IB Biology page names Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich and Zug — Basel is absent. Its Basel location page, meanwhile, still contains the sentence "we understand international school students in Geneva like no one else", and lists a Geneva telephone number. We mention it not to score a point but because it is the practical answer to a real question: in the city whose economy is built on biology, a family looking for in-person IB Biology at Higher Level is currently being routed online.

We do it in person, at the same price as online. CHF 95 an hour at Higher Level, CHF 81 an hour on a ten-hour package, at your table in Basel, Reinach, Aesch, Riehen or Binningen. If we do not have three genuine Higher Level specialists free in a subject, we will tell you that rather than send a Standard Level tutor and hope.

IB packages, and how long you have

Hours are bought prepaid in blocks of 5, 10 or 20. The discount is for paying upfront, not for buying in bulk. Twenty hours is a full school term at one 90-minute session a week — which, started in November, is exactly the run into the May session.

How long you have

A full year to use your package. Your best rate held for up to three months.

Two clocks, doing different things. The short one protects the rate you paid. The long one is how long the value stays on your account — which matters in the Diploma more than anywhere else, because a package bought for a scientific investigation in DP1 is often finished off on Paper 2 technique in DP2.

5 hoursBest rate held for 1 month
10 hoursBest rate held for 2 months
20 hoursBest rate held for 3 months
Every package — valid for 12 months from the day you buy it Long enough to run from an internal assessment in one school year into exam technique in the next.
  • The rate clock pauses over school holidays, automatically, on your own school's calendar. Basel is unusual in having three that do not line up — ISB's, Basel-Stadt's and Basel-Landschaft's. We use yours, not an average.
  • One free one-month extension on the rate window, for the asking, up to 30 days before it closes. Auto-approved, and we offer it before you have to ask.
  • When the rate window closes, nothing is taken. The hours already used are recalculated at the standard rate and the balance stays on your account for the rest of the twelve months.
  • You will hear from us long before the year is up — a reminder at nine months and another at eleven.
A worked example, on the Basel IB calendar. A DP1 family chooses Distinction and buys a 10-hour package in mid-January for Chemistry Higher Level, using six hours on the scientific investigation before the two-month window closes in March. Six hours at the standard CHF 130 is CHF 780, so CHF 330 stays on the account. That balance is still there the following November for Paper 2 technique, redeemed against the rate on the day. Nothing was taken when the rate window closed.

If it goes wrong

What happens if it isn't right?

The strongest thing we can tell you about a first lesson is what happens if it disappoints you. When it does, you choose which of the first two applies — we do not choose for you.

01

Not right? Your money back.

If the first lesson on your package does not meet your expectations for tutor knowledge or professionalism, we refund the whole package to your card — including the hour you had. No questions, no conditions, nothing to argue about.

02

Or carry on with someone else.

Would you rather stay? We assign a different tutor and credit that hour straight back to your package. Your choice, not ours — and you can ask for a different tutor at any later point too, at no cost.

03

Fourteen days to change your mind

Bought a package and had second thoughts before starting? A full refund to your card within 14 days, provided no lesson has been taken. Switzerland gives no statutory right of withdrawal online — this one is ours, voluntarily.

04

Free cancellation until 17:00

Cancel or reschedule until 17:00 the day before and the hour is not deducted from your package. Children get ill and school trips move; that is not something to be charged for. No minimum term, no notice period, no enrolment fee.

1

May is the session here

Both Basel IB schools examine in May. The 2026 session ran from 24 April to 20 May, with Physics papers at the end of April and Biology and Chemistry in mid-May. November is a retake route in Basel, not a native one — which surprises most families.

2

6 July, 12.00 GMT

May-session results are released to candidates from noon GMT on 6 July. November-session results go to schools on 16 December from 21.00 GMT.

3

The retake cap is gone

The three-session rule was removed in 2023. A student may now retake subjects in any future session at any authorised IB World School, subject to the school accepting them and to any syllabus changes.

4

Enquiries go through the school

The IB will not accept a re-mark request from a candidate or a parent directly — it must come from the school's coordinator, it carries a fee, and grades can go down as well as up. Written consent is required first.

ISB dates are from its published 2026–27 academic calendar. Cantonal dates for Basel-Stadt should be confirmed against the cantonal data portal before you book travel — ours came from a secondary aggregator because the cantonal page did not render its dates to us. Basel-Landschaft dates are from the cantonal site; note that Gymnasium Laufental-Thierstein starts its summer break later. Basler Fasnacht falls on 15–17 February 2027.

What the price buys

What an IB specialist actually does differently

"IB tutor" is not a protected term and a great deal of what is sold under it is subject knowledge with an IB label on the invoice. Four things separate the real thing, and all four are checkable.

They teach the command terms

Analyse, evaluate, discuss, justify, to what extent. The IB marks against these and students lose whole bands answering the wrong verb. It is teachable in an hour and almost never taught.

They mark against the mark scheme

Not "that's good". A specific band, a specific reason, and the one change that moves it. A student who can predict their own mark has learned the actual skill.

They know the four IA criteria by name

Research design, data analysis, conclusion, evaluation — six marks each, twenty per cent of the grade, and one draft of teacher feedback. A well-run ordinary experiment written to the rubric beats a brilliant one written badly.

They are the right level of tutor

Higher Level is Specialist work at CHF 95 and we staff it with genuine Higher Level people. If three genuine Higher Level specialists in a subject are not available, we say so rather than sending a Standard Level tutor and hoping. Distinction at CHF 130 is there whenever you want our most accomplished tutors on it.

If you are weighing the Swiss route

There is no Gymi entrance exam in Basel — but there is a grade threshold

Relocating families arrive expecting Zurich's ZAP and find something quite different, twice over, because Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft run separate systems and International School Basel physically sits in the second one.

BS

Basel-Stadt

Admission to the four-year Gymnasium is decided on Sekundarschule year 3 report cards — both the grade average and a points sum are considered. Five state Gymnasien, all offering a bilingual German–English Matura; Münsterplatz and Bäumlihof add the IB.

From the P stream: an average of at least 4.0 and a points sum of at least 34, from double German, double Mathematics, plus Nature & Technology, Spaces/Times/Societies, French and English. From the E stream: at least 5.0 and at least 40. German and Mathematics count double — that is the whole leverage of the system.

There is one exam, and it is explicitly voluntary: the freiwillige Aufnahmeprüfung, for pupils who miss the threshold. Two 90-minute written papers, German and Mathematics. The next sitting is Friday 12 March 2027, with a medical resit on 18 March; registration for 2027/28 runs 4–29 January 2027.

BL

Basel-Landschaft

Where ISB actually is — and it does not use the word "entrance exam" at all. Registration for a Gymnasium or a Fachmittelschule opens online in January.

Where the grades are not sufficient, admission is decided in certain cases by a Leistungsabklärung — 60 minutes of written German and 60 minutes of written Mathematics, equally weighted. FMS and WMS additionally require a completed online self-assessment. Getting these two cantons' vocabulary the wrong way round is the most obvious tell of a page written from a translation.

Getting between them

BLT tram 11 runs from Basel, St-Louis Grenze to Aesch BL via Bahnhof SBB, Barfüsserplatz, Marktplatz, Münchenstein and Reinach. ISB's own directions are: from Basel SBB, tram 11 towards Aesch, alight at Reinacherhof.

All three ISB campuses sit on that one line, which is why we can send the same tutor to Aesch and Reinach in an afternoon without a travel charge.

Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft admission rules are from the cantonal education pages. The specific point thresholds circulating in expat community guides for Basel-Stadt are not published on a cantonal page and we do not repeat them here. If you are choosing between the IB Diploma and the Matura, that is a decision about curriculum, language and university destination — see our Swiss Matura tutor and Gymi preparation Basel pages.

Reassigned without friction

If the fit is wrong, say so. We reassign at no cost, and your hours stay with your family — they were never attached to one tutor.

Named claims, or none

We describe a tutor as an examiner or an international-school teacher only where that is verified on the roster for that assignment. It is never a tier name and never a standing brand claim.

Questions

Common questions from IB families in Basel

How much does an IB tutor cost in Basel?

CHF 95 per 60 minutes for Standard Level, Higher Level and MYP, all-in, with Good Tutors Finder. Prepaid packages lower it: ten hours are CHF 810, which is CHF 81 an hour. Distinction at CHF 130, or CHF 1,110 for ten hours, is our most accomplished tutors and you can choose it on any IB work. There is no enrolment fee, no travel surcharge into Basel-Landschaft and no difference between a lesson at home and a lesson online. Across the wider market, published rates run from about CHF 9 to 45 an hour on unvetted Swiss marketplaces, CHF 30 to 101 for online IB agencies, and CHF 100 to 160 for face-to-face tuition from the largest international agency, which also charges a one-off CHF 100 family enrolment fee.

Which schools in Basel teach the IB?

Four. International School Basel runs all three IB programmes — Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma — across campuses in Aesch, Fiechten and Reinach, and describes itself as the region's only not-for-profit English-language three-programme IB World School. Gymnasium am Münsterplatz has been an IB World School since May 2011 and offers the Diploma in grades 12 and 13, but only in addition to the cantonal Matura. Gymnasium Bäumlihof describes a full Diploma Programme on its own site, integrated into the four-year Gymnasium as a “GBplus” class, again alongside the Swiss Matura — note that the cantonal page lists only Münsterplatz, and we follow the school's own page. SIS Swiss International School Basel runs a two-year Diploma alongside a bilingual Hausmatura. Academia International School and ELA Basel do not offer the IB — they run Cambridge IGCSE and A Levels, and the Cambridge curriculum or Lehrplan 21, respectively.

Does Gymnasium Leonhard offer the IB?

No, and this is a common mix-up. Gymnasium Leonhard is a Basel-Stadt state school with a languages and arts emphasis, offering Schwerpunktfächer in Italian, Spanish, Music and Visual Arts. The Basel-Stadt Gymnasium best known for the IB is Gymnasium am Münsterplatz — and Gymnasium Bäumlihof describes a full Diploma Programme on its own site too, integrated into its four-year model. All five Basel-Stadt state Gymnasien offer a bilingual German–English Matura, which is not the IB Diploma and is the source of most of the confusion.

Can my child do IB Chemistry or Physics at Gymnasium am Münsterplatz?

Not at the school itself. Münsterplatz's IB subject list is German, English, French, History or Geography, Biology and Mathematics — Biology is its only IB science. A student there who wants Chemistry or Physics at IB Higher Level is looking at a route outside their own timetable, and that is a conversation to have with the school's IB coordinator before committing. It is also worth knowing that Münsterplatz offers two routes: the full Diploma, or bilingualism across five subjects with IB Certificates in English and French but no Diploma. The IB exams sit in May at the end of grade 13, and exam fees are around CHF 1,600.

Do you tutor in person in Basel, or only online?

In person, at your home in Basel, Reinach, Aesch, Riehen, Binningen, Muttenz, Pratteln or Liestal, at exactly the same price as online. This is worth checking with any provider you speak to: the largest agency in this market lists face-to-face IB Chemistry in Basel but lists face-to-face IB Biology only in Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich and Zug — Basel is absent from its own Biology page. In the city whose economy is built on biology, that is a real gap, and it is one of the reasons this page exists.

What does the IB sciences internal assessment involve?

A single scientific investigation of up to 3,000 words, allocated 10 hours of taught time, worth 20 per cent of the subject grade at both Standard and Higher Level. It carries 24 marks across four equally weighted criteria — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — at six marks each. Your teacher may give feedback on one draft only. Collaboration on data collection is allowed, but the research question, the analysis and the conclusions must be the student's own. Separately, every DP sciences student takes part in the Collaborative Sciences Project, which lasts at least 10 hours, is not assessed, and requires only a 100-word reflection.

Is there a Gymi entrance exam in Basel?

No, not as the standard route. Basel-Stadt admits to the Gymnasium on Sekundarschule year 3 report cards, weighing both the grade average and a points sum: from the P stream, at least 4.0 and at least 34 points; from the E stream, at least 5.0 and at least 40. German and Mathematics count double. Pupils who miss the threshold may register in January for the freiwillige Aufnahmeprüfung — explicitly voluntary — which is two 90-minute written papers in German and Mathematics; the next sitting is Friday 12 March 2027, with registration for 2027/28 running 4–29 January. Basel-Landschaft, where International School Basel is physically located, does not use the term at all: registration opens online in January, and where the grades are not sufficient a Leistungsabklärung — 60 minutes of German and 60 minutes of Mathematics — decides in certain cases.

When are the IB exams, and when do results come out?

Both Basel IB schools examine in the May session. The May 2026 session ran from 24 April to 20 May, with Physics papers at the end of April and Biology and Chemistry papers in mid-May. May results are released to candidates from 12.00 GMT on 6 July. The November session — used in Basel as a retake route rather than a native one — issues results to schools on 16 December from 21.00 GMT. Since 2023 there is no longer a three-session limit on retakes.

What can be done after results day?

More than most families realise, and quickly. An enquiry upon results must be submitted by the school's coordinator — the IB will not accept a request from a candidate or parent directly — it carries a fee, requires written consent first, and grades can go down as well as up. A retake in a future session is now possible without the old three-session cap, though the school must accept the candidate and syllabus changes may apply. In practice November-session work is bought between June and August and delivered from September to November; a 10- or 20-hour package started in July gives a real run at a subject rather than a scramble in October.

Can you help with the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge?

Yes, and they are tutored as ordinary hours from your package rather than sold as an add-on. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word paper with three mandatory reflection sessions, the last of which is the viva voce, marked out of 34 and banded A to E. Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an exhibition and a 1,600-word essay, also banded A to E. Between them the core contributes up to three points, and there are automatic failing conditions — an E in the Extended Essay with an A in TOK, for instance. How good are International School Basel's IB results?

In 2026, 124 ISB students completed the Diploma Programme. Of the 118 full Diploma candidates, 98 per cent passed — against a world average of around 81 per cent — with an average of 35.2 points out of 45, against a world average of 30.9. Twenty-one per cent scored 40 points or more, roughly double the typical world proportion. Six students took individual Courses, averaging 4.5 out of 7 across 34 subjects. Note that an older ISB page still publishes 2019/20 figures; the 2026 numbers are the current ones.

My child needs 24 points to pass. What are the other conditions?

Twenty-four points is the minimum, out of a maximum of 45 — six subjects at up to seven points each, plus up to three points from the core. Beyond the total there are subject-level conditions: at least a grade 2 in every subject, no more than two grade 2s, no more than three grades of 3 or below, at least 12 points across the Higher Level subjects and at least nine across the Standard Level ones. A student is taking three or four subjects at Higher Level and the rest at Standard, with Higher Level courses running 240 teaching hours against Standard Level's 150. Every Diploma student takes at least one Group 4 science, and Environmental Systems and Societies counts for both Group 3 and Group 4. If you would rather talk it through before committing to anything, that costs nothing — book a tutor and tell us what your child is sitting, or send a WhatsApp message and ask first.
