No. Münsterplatz runs the IB Diploma alongside the Swiss Matura, but its IB subjects are German, English, French, history or geography, biology and mathematics. Chemistry is not among them, and the reason is structural: the IB there is delivered as the Schwerpunktfach "Englisch mit International Baccalaureate", an English-track specialism rather than a science one. Two of the school's own pages, one in English and one in German, list the same six subjects. A Münsterplatz student who needs a chemistry qualification takes it as a Swiss Matura subject, in German, on a different syllabus, on the same timetable as their IB courses. That is a real workload problem and it is worth planning tutoring around rather than discovering in grade 12.

International School Basel offers IB Chemistry at both Standard and Higher Level, taught at its Reinach campus for Grades 9 to 12. Academia International School, beside Basel SBB, lists chemistry for both IGCSE and A Level. Among the five Basel-Stadt state Gymnasien, only Kirschgarten and Bäumlihof offer the Schwerpunktfach Biologie und Chemie — Leonhard, Münsterplatz and the Wirtschaftsgymnasium do not. In Basel-Landschaft, Gymnasium Liestal runs profile B, Biologie und Chemie, framed as preparation for biology, chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacy at university, and Gymnasium Oberwil publishes both a Grundlagenfach and an Ergänzungs- or Wahlkurs in chemistry.

Not at all, and this is the most useful thing on this page. Across the region's bilingual and immersion programmes, English-medium and French-medium teaching consistently covers mathematics, geography, history, biology and physics — and consistently stops short of chemistry. Gymnasium am Münsterplatz teaches biology, geography and computer science in English but not chemistry. Gymnasium Liestal's bilingual Matura teaches biology in English and physics in French, and chemistry in neither. Freies Gymnasium Basel offers English-medium biology, physics, geography and history, but not chemistry. Unless your child is at ISB or Academia, they are likely to be doing chemistry in German — and at SIS, which publishes no subject-language list, it is worth asking the school directly. The University of Basel's chemistry BSc is taught in German too.

Twenty-four marks, not thirty. Since first assessment in May 2025 the internal assessment is a single task called the scientific investigation: an open-ended piece in which the student answers their own research question using quantitative data they collected. It is allocated 10 hours of taught time, is worth 20 per cent of the subject grade at both Standard and Higher Level, and carries 24 marks across four equally weighted criteria of six marks each — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The report has a maximum of 3,000 words. The requirement is identical in biology, chemistry and physics, so a student taking two sciences learns the skill once.

Charts and diagrams, data tables, equations, formulas and calculations, citations and references in any style, the bibliography, and headers. No cover page and no contents page are required. The report must state at the start its title, the candidate's IB code, the candidate codes of any group members where data collection was collaborative, and the word count. The research question, the analysis and the conclusions must be the student's own — which is precisely the boundary a tutor works up to and does not cross.

No. It is ten required hours of the experimental programme at both Standard and Higher Level, an interdisciplinary sciences task addressing a real-world problem, and it has its own IB guide — but it does not appear in the assessment outline and carries no separate weighting. The subject total is 80 per cent external examination plus 20 per cent internal assessment, and nothing else. Some pages selling IB chemistry tuition claim the project is worth 20 or 22 per cent. It is not, and a family budgeting revision time on that basis will misallocate it.

In the May 2025 session, 20,095 candidates sat Chemistry at Higher Level for a mean grade of 4.8, and 17,646 sat it at Standard Level for a mean of 4.3. Standard Level scores lower — which is the opposite of what most families assume when they drop a level to protect a points total. The likely reason is selection rather than difficulty: Higher Level attracts students who intend to use the subject. Roughly 15 per cent of Higher Level candidates and under 10 per cent of Standard Level candidates were awarded a 7. If the motive for moving to Standard Level is a predicted grade, the published data does not obviously support the move.

Extended, if there is any real doubt. Core candidates take Paper 1 and Paper 3 and can achieve a maximum of grade 5 on the 9 to 1 scale, or grade C on the A* to G scale — the ceiling is set by the entry, before a single question is answered. Extended candidates take Paper 2 and Paper 4 and are eligible for the full range. Cambridge's own guidance is that candidates expected to achieve grade 3 or below take Core and candidates expected to achieve grade 4 or above take Extended. Both routes add either Paper 5, the laboratory Practical Test, or Paper 6, the Alternative to Practical, worth 20 per cent. This is the single most consequential and least discussed decision in IGCSE chemistry.

Yes. Academia International School's Basel campus at Hochstrasse 16, next to Basel SBB, is an accredited examination centre for both Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel. It runs IGCSE and A Level in the May/June series, in October/November for selected subjects and in January for Edexcel — and it accepts external candidates as well as its own students. For a home-schooled child, a candidate resitting a paper, or a family who has moved mid-course, that removes an international trip from the problem. Contact the school's examinations office directly for entry deadlines, which are not published on the page.

Less than most parents expect. The cantonal Stundentafel for the Basel-Stadt Gymnasien allocates chemistry six Jahreslektionen across the whole four-year programme, out of 132 compulsory in total — under five per cent. Depth comes from the Schwerpunktfach Biologie und Chemie, worth 16, which only Kirschgarten and Bäumlihof offer, or the Ergänzungsfach, worth 6. For comparison, IB Chemistry at Higher Level is 240 taught hours. The two qualifications are genuinely different subjects rather than the same subject in different languages, which is why we ask which one your child sits before assigning anybody.

The S3 train to Aesch is unaffected, at about 18 to 25 minutes from Basel SBB against roughly 32 for Reinach, so an Aesch appointment is easier to schedule than a Reinach one until December.
