Biology Tutors in Basel — IB, Matura, IGCSE

4.9rated by families in Switzerland · from 1,756 client reviews

Basel's state IB Gymnasium teaches exactly one science at Diploma level, and it is biology. That single fact reorganises what tutoring here has to be.

Biology tutoring in Basel

What does a biology tutor in Basel cost?

A biology tutor in Basel costs CHF 95 per 60 minutes for IB Biology at Standard Level and Higher Level, IGCSE Biology, MYP Sciences, Cambridge International A Level, Schwerpunktfach Biologie und Chemie and Matura Grundlagenfach Biologie, all-in. Prepaid packages lower it: ten hours are CHF 810, which is CHF 81 an hour. Distinction, at CHF 130 an hour or CHF 1,110 for ten, is our most accomplished tutors — a choice you can make on any biology, never a level we assign. No enrolment fee, no travel charge out to Reinach or Aesch, and no in-person premium.

Biology only

Gymnasium am Münsterplatz runs the IB Diploma alongside the Matura, and its entire Group 4 offering is Biology. No IB chemistry, no IB physics.

2 of 5

Basel-Stadt Gymnasien offer the Schwerpunktfach Biologie und Chemie — Kirschgarten and Bäumlihof. Leonhard, Münsterplatz and the Wirtschaftsgymnasium do not.

7.2%

Of the 33,102 candidates who sat IB Biology at Higher Level in May 2025 were awarded a 7. The mean grade was 4.5.

No biology

School provision is taken from each school's own subject pages and from the cantonal schools office list of the five Basel-Stadt Gymnasien. Syllabus structure is from the IB Biology guide, first assessment 2025, and paper durations from the IB's own published May 2026 examination schedule. Grade data is from the IB's final statistical bulletin for the May 2025 session. Cambridge structures are from the 0610 syllabus for examinations 2026 to 2028 and the 9700 syllabus for 2025 to 2027. Competitor rates are as published on their own sites in August 2026 and normalised to CHF per 60 minutes where the provider states a unit we can convert. If you are earlier in the process, our Basel IB overview sets out the whole Diploma rather than one subject.

Getting the schools right

Where is biology actually taught around Basel?

Nine schools and school groups in this region are named here individually, and the four remaining Baselland gymnasiums are listed as the canton lists them, because we could not confirm biology provision at school level for those four. They do not all teach the same thing. One offers it as the only IB science in the building; two offer a four-year Swiss specialisation; one teaches 240 lessons of it in English. Here is what each of them publishes.

SchoolBiology qualificationWhat that actually means
Gymnasium am Münsterplatz
Basel-Stadt
IB Biology — and nothing else in Group 4The school's published IB structure runs Group 1 German or English, Group 2 English or German, Group 3 geography or history, Group 4 Biology, Group 5 mathematics at standard or higher level, Group 6 French. A pupil who wants an IB science at Münsterplatz takes biology, because there is no other one to take. The Diploma runs from the middle of grade 11 to the middle of grade 13, with the written examinations in May of grade 13.
International School Basel
Reinach BL, Grades 9–12
IB Biology SL and HLBiology sits in a Group 4 that also holds chemistry, physics, computer science, design technology, sport, exercise and health science, and environmental systems and societies, inside an advertised 65-plus course list. Every Diploma biologist is at the Reinach campus on Fleischbachstrasse — Aesch is ages 3 to 12 and Fiechten is Grades 7 and 8. More on what we do inside that school on our ISB page.
Gymnasium Kirschgarten
Basel-Stadt
Schwerpunktfach + immersion biologyBoth of the canton's science specialisations run here, Biologie und Chemie and Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik, and the school also teaches Geografie, Biologie and Chemie immersively in English from year 1. Biology alone accounts for 80 lessons in each of years 1, 2 and 3 — 240 lessons of English-medium biology inside the state system.
Gymnasium Bäumlihof
Basel-Stadt
Schwerpunktfach Biologie und ChemieThe only other Basel-Stadt school with the science specialisation. It describes the Schwerpunktfach as substantially extending the base knowledge and laboratory skills of the two Grundlagenfächer, with practical work in both subjects and topic blocks on genetic engineering, climate and pandemics, plus a dedicated Schwerpunktwoche.
Leonhard, Wirtschaftsgymnasium
Basel-Stadt
Grundlagenfach onlyNeither offers Biologie und Chemie as a Schwerpunktfach. A pupil who discovers biology at Leonhard has the cantonal core and no science Schwerpunktfach. Whether Biologie is available there as an Ergänzungsfach sits in a school-by-school annex we have not read — ask the school. In Basel-Stadt the school is chosen years before the subject matters, and that is the strongest argument for reading the subject tables before choosing the school rather than after.
SIS Swiss International School BaselBilingual IBDP + HausmaturaThree Diploma routes — bilingual German and English at C1 in both, English-focused, and a German ab initio route — and the option to leave with the IB Diploma and a nationally recognised bilingual Hausmatura. In the bilingual college the "biology and chemistry" specialisation is taught in English, while physics and applications of mathematics is taught in German. SIS does not publish a Diploma subject grid, so we do not claim one.
Academia International School
Hochstrasse 16, 4053 Basel
IGCSE and A LevelKindergarten to Year 12 with over 300 students: IGCSE in Years 9 and 10, then three or four A Level subjects in Years 11 and 12. It is an accredited examination centre for both Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International, in Basel and Zurich, for internal and external candidates, across May/June, October/November and January. It publishes no subject-level syllabus codes, so we do not attribute one to it.
Gymnasium Liestal
Basel-Landschaft
Schwerpunktfach B + ErgänzungsfachBiologie, Chemie and Physik as Grundlagenfächer, "B — Biologie und Chemie" as the Schwerpunktfach, and Biologie again among the Ergänzungsfächer alongside Physik, Chemie and Anwendung der Mathematik. It is the one Baselland school where we could confirm the specialisation from the school's own page rather than the cantonal list.
Muttenz, Münchenstein, Oberwil, Laufental-Thierstein
Basel-Landschaft
Cantonal option, not school-confirmedBasel-Landschaft has five Gymnasien in total and lists Biologie und Chemie among the Schwerpunktfächer available across the system, on a four-year route to the federally recognised Maturität. We could only verify the subject school-by-school at Liestal, so we say that rather than implying all five. Ask the school directly, or ask us and we will ask for you.

14

What the Swiss route weighs, in lessons

The Basel-Stadt cantonal Lehrplan allocates 6 Jahreswochenlektionen to Grundlagenfach Biologie, 14 to the Schwerpunktfach Biologie und Chemie and 2 to the Maturarbeit. The Schwerpunktfach is therefore not a slightly deeper version of the core subject; it is more than twice the subject again, and it is only available in two of the canton's five schools.

Set that beside IB Biology at Higher Level, which the IB costs at 240 taught hours, and it becomes obvious why we ask which qualification a child sits before we assign anyone. A tutor fluent in one of these is not automatically useful for the other. Our Swiss Matura page covers the cantonal route in full.

240

The English-medium biology we have not seen advertised

Kirschgarten's immersion programme puts Geografie, Biologie and Chemie into English from the first year, adding history in years 3 and 4, and a pupil who passes 800 immersion lessons in total leaves with the zweisprachige Matur. Biology carries 240 of those lessons on its own — the largest single English-medium science block in the Basel state system.

Which cuts both ways. An English-speaking family in Basel has an option for biology in English inside the state system, and we have not found another provider in this market that mentions it. A German-speaking family at the same school has a language problem inside a science subject, in a year group where the vocabulary is the content. Back in 2014 the SRF reported that well over half of Kirschgarten pupils — around 60 per cent — were choosing the Biologie–Chemie specialisation. That figure is old and we quote it as old, but the pressure it describes has not gone anywhere.

The finding this page exists for

Which science does Basel's IB Gymnasium actually teach?

Biology. Only biology. Gymnasium am Münsterplatz has run the Diploma alongside the Swiss Matura for years, and its Group 4 list has one entry on it. For a family at any other school that is trivia. For a Münsterplatz family it decides the next three years.

  • The subject list is published, in two languages. German or English, English or German, geography or history, biology, mathematics at standard or higher level, French. The school's own English page and its German Inhalte und Ablauf page name the same set. Biology is the only science in it.
  • There is no science Schwerpunktfach to fall back on. Münsterplatz offers PPP, Englisch mit IB, Spanisch, Latein and Griechisch, and states that every other subject is a Grundlagenfach identical to the other Basel Gymnasien. So chemistry and physics exist there only as German-language core subjects, at cantonal depth, with no route upward.
  • The Diploma sits on top of a Matura, not instead of one. It runs from the middle of grade 11 to the middle of grade 13, with a written IB examination each May in every one of the six subject areas, and the school puts the total programme fee at an estimated CHF 1,800. The internal work is not a side task: the school describes internal assessment as roughly 30 per cent of the Diploma grade overall and the written examinations as roughly 70.
  • So a Münsterplatz biologist is doing the hardest version of this. An IB science taken on top of a full Swiss Matura, with the exam in May of the final year. We have not found another provider in this market that mentions that combination, let alone plans tuition around it.

The practical consequence is that Münsterplatz biology hours are not interchangeable with ISB biology hours. One student needs the IB assessment machinery — themes, command terms, the scientific investigation — layered on top of a German school culture that does not run on it. The other has been inside that machinery since Grade 6. We ask which before we assign, and the answer changes the tutor, not the price.

A tutor working one to one with a student at a kitchen table in Basel, both writing in an exercise book
DE

Two vocabularies, one lesson

A Münsterplatz pupil carries an IB Group 4 science and, alongside it, chemistry and physics as German-language Grundlagenfächer, in the same week. Stoffwechsel, Zellatmung, Erbgang, Fotosynthese — the terms are the concepts, and a student translating before they can think loses the marks in the time it takes. We staff tutors who hold both sets. It is not a surcharge and not a different tier; ask for it when you book.

EN

Or the reverse, which is just as common

A German-speaking child entering Kirschgarten's immersion stream or moving into ISB meets osmosis, homeostasis and natural selection for the first time in a language they use in the playground but have never used technically. Same problem, opposite direction, same fix, same price.

3

Three calendars, honestly

Baselland's autumn break is 26 September to 11 October 2026 and its summer starts 3 July 2027. ISB breaks 5 to 16 October 2026 and finishes on 17 June 2027, a fortnight earlier. Basel-Stadt runs a third calendar again. A family with one child in the city and one at Reinach is managing all three, and tutoring planned on cantonal dates alone misses the ISB families entirely.

First assessment 2025

What does IB Biology now ask for?

A different course from the one most guides still describe. First taught in 2023, first examined in May 2025: the Options are gone, Paper 3 is gone, and the old topic list has been rebuilt as four themes crossed with four levels of organisation. A tutor still teaching the previous shape is teaching a course your child is not sitting.

4

Four themes, worked at four levels

The syllabus is A Unity and diversity, B Form and function, C Interaction and interdependence and D Continuity and change. Each theme is then worked through the same four organising levels — molecules, cells, organisms, ecosystems — so that the same idea is revisited at four scales rather than filed once and forgotten.

That architecture is the whole point of the redesign, and it is also why past-paper drilling alone underperforms here. Questions cut across a theme at a level the student has met three times in different guises. Revision organised by textbook chapter does not survive contact with it.

0

No Options, and no Paper 3

Paper 1 is sat in a single sitting in two parts: Paper 1A, multiple choice, and Paper 1B, data-based questions tied to the experimental programme. Paper 2 is data-based and short-answer work leading into extended response. The Standard and Higher courses are the same document, with the additional higher level material carried inside each theme rather than bolted on at the end.

Durations, from the IB's own May 2026 examination schedule: Paper 1 is 1 hour 30 minutes at Standard Level and 2 hours at Higher; Paper 2 is 1 hour 30 minutes at Standard and 2 hours 30 minutes at Higher. In that session Biology Paper 1 fell on Monday 11 May and Paper 2 on Tuesday 12 May, both in the morning, inside an examination period running from 24 April to 20 May 2026.

Read the bottom half of that table slowly, because it is the number nobody quotes. A Standard Level biologist has forty experimental hours, and twenty of them are already committed — ten to an assessed investigation and ten to a project that carries no marks at all. What is left for ordinary laboratory practice is twenty hours across two years. Higher Level fares better at forty, but the same squeeze applies. If your child's practical technique feels thin, that is the arithmetic, not the child.

The single task that carries a fifth of the grade

The scientific investigation, stated correctly

One open-ended piece of work in which the student answers a research question of their own with data they collected themselves. The scientific investigation is the internal assessment for IB Biology, and our investigation hours are not attached to a subject — a family taking two sciences can spend them across both. We do that routinely.

20 per centOf the final subject grade
24 marks — research design, data analysis, conclusion, evaluation, at six marks each Four equally weighted criteria of six marks each, under the guide for first assessment 2025.
  • One draft. That is the rule, and it is the reason this page exists commercially. The teacher is permitted to give feedback on a single draft of the scientific investigation. After that the student revises alone and submits. Twenty per cent of the subject grade is decided in revisions the school is not allowed to help with — which is precisely where internal assessment hours earn their money, and why families book them in the autumn rather than the spring.
  • Arrive at that draft already sound. A research question that cannot generate enough quantitative data is not rescuable at the editing stage, and no amount of polish moves the research design criterion. The most valuable hour in the whole package is usually the first one, spent on the question.
  • The collaborative sciences project is not graded. Ten timetabled hours at both levels, interdisciplinary, sitting inside the experimental programme — and carrying no separate weighting in the assessment. It is worth doing well and it is not worth revising for.
  • The Swiss equivalent is the Maturaarbeit, timetabled at 2 Jahreswochenlektionen in Basel-Stadt and required of every candidate. It is the same problem in a different system: a long, largely unsupervised piece of independent science writing on which a disproportionate share of the outcome rests. Families often buy one package and use it for whichever of the two their child faces.
The number that should shape your expectations. In the May 2025 session, 33,102 candidates sat Biology at Higher Level for a mean grade of 4.5, with 7.2 per cent awarded a 7 and 16.6 per cent a 6. At Standard Level, 21,939 candidates averaged 4.3, with 5.9 per cent awarded a 7. Session-wide, the May 2025 mean Diploma total was 30.6 points against a pass rate of 81.9 per cent. International School Basel's 2026 cohort — 124 candidates, 118 of them full Diploma — averaged 35.2 points with a 98 per cent pass rate and 21 per cent above 40, against the world average of 30.9 the school reports for that 2026 session. That gap between a world mean of 30.9 in 2026 and a Reinach mean of 35.2 is what a Basel parent is actually buying against, and it is why "she is doing fine" and "she is on track for a 7" are not the same sentence.

Teaching hours, the four themes and the four levels of organisation are from the IB Biology guide for first assessment 2025. Paper durations and dates are from the IB's published May 2026 examination schedule. Grade distributions are from the IB's final statistical bulletin for May 2025, and the school cohort figures are as published by International School Basel. We do not print paper mark totals or the percentage split between Paper 1 and Paper 2 on this page, because the only sources we could reach for those were secondary. If you want the components separately, see IB tutoring and science tutoring across Switzerland.

Every package — valid for 12 months from the day you buy it Long enough to carry a family from an investigation in one school year into examination technique in the next.
  • The rate clock pauses over school holidays, automatically, on your own school's calendar rather than an average of everyone's. In this region that is not a small distinction: Baselland breaks from 26 September to 11 October 2026, International School Basel from 5 to 16 October, and Basel-Stadt runs a third set of dates again. ISB then finishes on 17 June 2027 while the Baselland schools run to 2 July. We use yours.
  • One free one-month extension on the rate window, for the asking, any time up to 30 days before it closes. Auto-approved — and we offer it before you have to think of it.
  • When the rate window closes, nothing is taken. The hours already used are recalculated at the standard rate and the remaining balance stays on your account for the rest of the twelve months. Credit is not forfeited here, and no hour ever expires early.
  • You will hear from us well before the year runs out — a reminder at nine months, and another at eleven.
A worked example, on the Basel biology calendar. A Diploma family chooses Distinction and buys a 10-hour package in late September for Biology Higher Level, and spends six hours between the Baselland autumn break and the end of November getting the scientific investigation's research question and design right — the part the school can only comment on once. The two-month rate window closes at the end of November. Six hours at the standard CHF 130 is CHF 780, so CHF 330 stays on the account. That balance is still there the following June for Theme D revision before the mock examinations, redeemed against the rate on the day. Nothing was taken when the rate window closed, and nothing had to be spent in a hurry to avoid losing it.

If it isn't right

What happens if the first lesson disappoints you?

Two guarantees sit on the first lesson of a package and you choose which one applies. We never choose on your behalf and we never steer you towards the second — a guarantee you have to extract is not a guarantee.

01

Not right? Your money back.

If the first lesson on your package does not meet your expectations for tutor knowledge or professionalism, the whole package goes back to your card — including the hour you already had. No questions and no conditions.

02

Or carry on with someone else.

Would you rather stay? We assign a different tutor and credit that hour straight back to the package. You can ask for a different tutor at any later point too, at no cost, though a lesson already taught stands.

03

Fourteen days to change your mind

Bought a package and had second thoughts before starting? A full refund to your card within 14 days, provided no lesson has been taken. Switzerland gives no statutory right of withdrawal for an online purchase — this one is ours, voluntarily.

04

Free cancellation until 17:00

Cancel or reschedule until 17:00 the day before and the hour is not deducted from your package. Children get ill and school trips move. No minimum term, no notice period and no enrolment fee.

The Cambridge route in Basel

Core or Extended: which IGCSE Biology route?

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 runs as two tiers, and one of them makes a top grade arithmetically impossible. The entry is made by the examination centre, not at the desk on the day — ask which route and which practical paper your child is entered for. We have not found another provider in this market that mentions it.

Paper 5 or Paper 6, and why the choice is not yours

Paper 5, the Practical Test, is 1 hour 15 minutes with real apparatus in a laboratory. Paper 6, the Alternative to Practical, is one hour and is written. Both are 40 marks, both carry the same 20 per cent, and both assess the same experimental skills across the same contexts — diffusion, osmosis, enzymes, photosynthesis. The entry is made by the examination centre, not at the desk on the day — ask which route and which practical paper your child is entered for. What does not change is that a fifth of the grade rests on experimental reasoning, and that is a teachable skill rather than a laboratory-access problem. Our IGCSE page covers the wider subject set.

A Level 9700, where the marks actually are

Two of the five papers are practical. Paper 3, Advanced Practical Skills, is a two-hour laboratory paper that requires the use of a light microscope, worth 11.5 per cent of the full A Level. Paper 5, Planning, Analysis and Evaluation, is a 1 hour 15 written paper worth another 11.5 per cent, set in unfamiliar contexts on purpose. Roughly a quarter of the qualification therefore sits on experimental work, and Paper 5 is where strong theory candidates most reliably lose marks, because it cannot be revised for by rereading content. See A Level tutoring.

And you can sit the papers here

Academia International School's Basel campus at Hochstrasse 16 is an accredited examination centre for both Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel, in Basel and Zurich, running May/June, October/November and January sessions — and it takes external candidates as well as its own. For a home-schooled child, a resit, or a family who arrived mid-course, that removes a flight from the problem. Entry deadlines are not published; contact the examinations office directly.

IGCSE structures are from the Cambridge 0610 syllabus for examinations in 2026, 2027 and 2028, which runs June and November series. Cambridge also publishes the subject under code 0970 on the 9 to 1 grading scale; the 0610 document does not cross-reference it, so we do not assert that the two syllabuses are identical. A Level structures are from the 9700 syllabus for 2025 to 2027. Paper weightings are printed as the 9700 syllabus table gives them. Cambridge does not publish grade thresholds inside these documents and none are quoted here. If you are still choosing between systems, our comparison of IB, IGCSE and A Level sets them side by side.

What the price buys

What does a biology specialist do differently?

"Biology tutor" is not a protected term, and on the open marketplaces nobody checks. Four things separate the real thing, and every one of them is checkable inside the first lesson.

They teach across the four levels, not down a chapter list

The syllabus revisits each theme at molecule, cell, organism and ecosystem scale. A tutor working chapter by chapter recreates exactly the fragmentation the redesign was meant to remove, and the student meets it again in the paper.

They mark against the four criteria by name

Research design, data analysis, conclusion, evaluation — six marks each. A student who can predict their own criterion score has learned the actual skill.

They know which biology your child is sitting

IB Higher Level at 240 hours, IGCSE Extended, A Level 9700 with two practical papers, and a Basel-Stadt Grundlagenfach worth six Jahreswochenlektionen are four different subjects. We ask before we assign, and we do not send one tutor to cover all four.

They carry the German terms as well

In this city that is not a nice extra. A Gymnasium pupil answers in German whatever language the lesson happened in, and a Kirschgarten immersion pupil does the reverse. A tutor working in one language only is teaching half the examination.

Basel, and what biology leads to

Does biology get your child into medicine in Basel?

Partly, and less directly than almost everyone selling tutoring here implies. You need two separate things: a strong biology grade in the school-leaving qualification, and a strong score in an aptitude test that contains no biology whatsoever. Confusing the two costs a year.

EMS

The test that decides it does not test biology

Medicine in Switzerland is capped, and the University of Basel is one of the numerus clausus universities, alongside Bern, Fribourg, Zurich and its Lucerne and St Gallen tracks, the Università della Svizzera italiana and ETH Zurich. The gate is the EMS aptitude test.

What the EMS actually is: eight groups of multiple-choice tasks plus the "Konzentriertes und sorgfältiges Arbeiten" subtest, measuring reasoning and memory and logical and spatial understanding, over roughly four hours — starting between 09:45 and 10:00 and finishing around 14:00 to 14:30. It is not a subject-knowledge test. No amount of biology revision moves that score.

We say so plainly because the alternative is selling biology hours as medicine preparation, which is this market's quiet dishonesty. Biology hours buy you the grade. They do not buy you the EMS.

2027

The dates, for a child applying next

For entry in 2027 the published sequence is: pre-registration closes 15 February 2027; EMS registration closes 25 May 2027, which is 45 days before the test; the EMS is sat on 9 July 2027; places are allocated by post in late July 2027; and placement confirmation is due in early August 2027.

The February deadline is the one families miss, because it falls in the same fortnight as the Fasnacht holidays and around six months before the child would start. It is a form, not an examination, and missing it is unrecoverable for that year.

Note also what is not published. The IB has released its May 2026 examination schedule, but the equivalent May 2027 file does not yet exist at the IB's own address. Anyone quoting you May 2027 biology dates today is quoting a third party. Plan against the May 2026 pattern and revise when the real timetable appears — that is what our exam preparation page works to.

The University of Basel's BSc Biologie is 180 ECTS over three years, starting in the autumn semester — and the first year is not mostly biology. It is Mathematische Methoden I and II, Einführung in die Physik I and II, introductory chemistry with exercises and organic chemistry fundamentals including a compulsory laboratory block in weeks 33 and 34, alongside plant and animal diversity, microbial diversity, ecology, cell biology and evolution. A pupil who takes biology and drops mathematics and chemistry walks into that first year underweight, and that is a conversation to have in grade 10, not grade 13.

The route into the labs that does not go through university

Laborant/in EFZ, Fachrichtung Biologie, is a three-year apprenticeship run by aprentas, the training association of the Basel chemical and pharmaceutical industry, with classroom teaching at its Berufsfachschule in Muttenz covering scientific fundamentals, laboratory methodology, applied mathematics, informatics and English. Entry is from Sekundarschule at the extended level, the Bezirksschule or above. Apprentices work with bacteria, cell cultures, viruses and animal models across microbiology, pharmacology, histology, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, in placements at member companies including Novartis Pharma, DSM Nutritional Products, Cilag, Lonza, Pentapharm, the Institut für medizinische Genetik und Pathologie at the Universitätsspital, the FHNW and Coop. It is a paid route into the same buildings, decided at Sek I — and we have not found another provider in this market that mentions it. Gymi preparation in Basel is the other side of that same decision.

Why the subject carries weight in this city specifically

Life sciences account for around 10 per cent of employment in Basel-Stadt against roughly 2 per cent nationally, and contribute about 40 per cent of a cantonal gross value added that stood at CHF 44.6 billion in 2024. Around 200,000 people work in the canton across more than 16,000 firms, of which over 99 per cent are small and medium-sized. Basel-Stadt firms accounted for roughly 35 per cent of all Swiss exports in 2024, about CHF 98 billion. The canton counts 700 life-sciences companies employing 33,000 people; the trinational supercluster across Switzerland, Germany and France counts more than 800 firms and 33,000 specialists. Novartis alone has about 7,000 people on its Basel campus, roughly 5,000 of them in research and development. Biology here is not an abstract school subject; it is the local industry.

Cantonal economic figures are from the Basel-Stadt office for economy and labour and the canton's own portrait pages; company figures from Novartis's 2025 Switzerland report and from aprentas. Admission rules, deadlines and the description of the aptitude test are from swissuniversities. Degree structure is from the University of Basel's own BSc Biologie study guide. We have deliberately not printed a Roche site headcount, an export composition split or any share of Basel residents speaking English at home, because those figures could not be sourced cleanly for this build.

The gap we went back and re-checked

One agency in this market has a Basel landing page. We read its live pages again on 11 August 2026, in raw HTML rather than in summary, because we wanted to state this precisely rather than conveniently.

On its IB Biology page, the sentence that names the Swiss cities reads: "For students in Switzerland, we provide face-to-face tutoring in Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, and Zug." Basel is not in it. The only place Basel appears on that page is the site-wide strip that runs "Tutoring where you want it when you want it across the Geneva, Lausanne, Basel, Zurich & Zug regions, and globally online." On the IB Chemistry page there is no face-to-face city sentence at all.

So the honest statement is narrow, and we will keep it narrow: the one page on that site that names cities for face-to-face science tuition is the biology page, and Basel is the city it leaves out. Its Basel landing page does claim local face-to-face availability generically, names five local schools, and answers on a Geneva 022 telephone number — and carries no Basel-specific subject list at all.

Where the cheaper options genuinely win

If your child needs company and structure rather than biology — someone at the table keeping them working through a revision plan they already understand — a CHF 20 to CHF 40 marketplace tutor is the right answer and we will tell you so on the telephone. One Swiss marketplace lists nine biology tutors in Basel from CHF 20 an hour, averaging CHF 38, and every one of them offers a free first lesson. We are not a better version of that. We are a different service, and it is only worth CHF 95 when the syllabus itself is the difficulty.

The test worth applying to any provider here, including us: "Which biology syllabus does my child sit, and how many drafts of the internal assessment is the school allowed to mark?" The answers are Core or Extended, SL or HL, Grundlagenfach or Schwerpunktfach — and one. A provider who cannot answer the second half has not read the guide. How our matching works is set out in full.

Ready when you are

Tell us the level, and whether you want us at the table

Biology Higher Level in person in Basel and an IGCSE Extended push online are different assignments. Say which, and we come back with someone who has taught it — typically within 48 to 72 hours. Nothing to pay to enquire and nothing to pay to be assigned, and the first lesson carries both guarantees set out above.

Our tutors

Who will be teaching your child?

Every tutor is employed through CANICET GmbH, a Swiss company — not subcontracted, and not introduced to you as a freelancer. Social contributions, accident cover and liability insurance sit with us, and your family carries no employment obligation of any kind.

Lukas, biology, chemistry and environmental science tutor at Good Tutors Finder Switzerland

Lukas

Biology, chemistry and environmental systems. The scientific investigation from research question to evaluation, practical method, and the four assessment criteria by name.

Daniel, mathematics, physics and computer science tutor at Good Tutors Finder Switzerland

Daniel

Mathematics, physics and computer science. The quantitative half of a biology investigation — sampling, uncertainty, statistical choice and the graph work that carries the data analysis criterion.

Eva, English, languages and humanities tutor at Good Tutors Finder Switzerland

Eva

English, languages and humanities. For the cases where a biology problem turns out to be a language problem — an immersion classroom, a German-language Matura examination, or a 3,000-word report that has to read as science.

Sophie, academic skills, psychology and sociology tutor at Good Tutors Finder Switzerland

Sophie

Academic skills alongside psychology and sociology. Planning a long report, working to a deadline nobody is chasing, and writing to the register a school marks against — which is most of what a Maturaarbeit needs.

Assigned, not browsed

You do not sift a directory of strangers. Tell us the syllabus, the level and the language, and we assign the right person, usually within 48 to 72 hours. If the family is outside the region, online tutoring is the same tutor at the same price.

Reassigned without friction

If the fit is wrong, say so. We reassign at no cost and your hours stay with your family — they were never attached to one tutor, or to one subject.

Named claims, or none

We describe a tutor as an examiner or an international-school teacher only where that is verified on the roster for that specific assignment. It is never a tier name and never a standing brand claim.

Questions

Common questions from Basel biology families

How much does a biology tutor cost in Basel?

CHF 95 per 60 minutes for IB Biology at Standard Level and Higher Level, IGCSE Biology, MYP Sciences, Cambridge International A Level, Schwerpunktfach work and Matura Grundlagenfach Biologie, all-in, with Good Tutors Finder. Prepaid packages lower it: ten hours are CHF 810, which is CHF 81 an hour. Distinction at CHF 130, or CHF 1,110 for ten hours, is our most accomplished tutors and you can choose it on any biology. There is no enrolment fee and no difference in price between a lesson at your table and a lesson online. Across the wider market in August 2026, open marketplaces published roughly CHF 20 to 70 an hour for biology in Basel, with one Basel biology listing averaging CHF 38; face-to-face agency tuition ran about CHF 100 to 160 an hour plus a one-off CHF 100 enrolment fee; and two large IB agencies quoted in pounds, from £58 and £59 an hour, online only.

Is Biology really the only IB science at Gymnasium am Münsterplatz?

Yes. The school's published Diploma structure lists Group 1 as German or English, Group 2 as English or German, Group 3 as geography or history, Group 4 as Biology, Group 5 as mathematics at standard or higher level and Group 6 as French. There is no IB chemistry and no IB physics. A second page in English and a third in German name the same set of subjects, so this is not an omission on one page. A Münsterplatz pupil who wants an IB science therefore takes biology, and studies chemistry and physics as German-language Grundlagenfächer instead. The school also has no science Schwerpunktfach, so there is no deeper route into either of those two subjects on its timetable.

Which Basel schools actually teach IB Biology?

International School Basel offers Biology at both Standard and Higher Level at its Reinach senior campus, inside a Group 4 that also holds chemistry, physics, computer science, design technology, sport, exercise and health science, and environmental systems and societies. Gymnasium am Münsterplatz runs the Diploma alongside the Swiss Matura and offers Biology as its only Group 4 subject. SIS Swiss International School Basel runs three Diploma routes and a bilingual Hausmatura, but does not publish a Diploma subject grid, so we do not state what it offers at which level. Academia International School follows the Cambridge route rather than the IB, with IGCSE in Years 9 and 10 and A Levels in Years 11 and 12.

What is the IB Biology internal assessment marked out of?

Twenty-four marks. Since first assessment in May 2025 the internal assessment is a single task called the scientific investigation: an open-ended piece in which the student answers a research question of their own using data they collected themselves. It is allocated 10 hours of the taught course, is worth 20 per cent of the subject grade at both Standard and Higher Level, and carries 24 marks across four equally weighted criteria of six marks each — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The report has a maximum of 3,000 words. The scientific investigation is the internal assessment for IB Biology, and our investigation hours are not attached to a subject — a family taking two sciences can spend them across both.

How many drafts of the investigation will the school mark?

One. The teacher is permitted to give feedback on a single draft of the scientific investigation report, and after that the student revises alone and submits. That rule is the most consequential thing a Diploma parent can know about this subject: twenty per cent of the grade is decided in revisions the school is not allowed to help with. It also explains the timing families should aim for. Arriving at that one draft with a research question that generates enough quantitative data, and with a design that is already sound, is worth more than any amount of editing afterwards — which is why investigation hours are usually bought in the autumn rather than the spring.

What do IB Biology Paper 1 and Paper 2 look like now?

There is no Paper 3, and there are no Options. Paper 1 is sat in one sitting in two parts: Paper 1A, multiple choice, and Paper 1B, data-based questions tied to the experimental programme. Paper 2 is data-based and short-answer work leading into extended response. Durations come from the IB's own May 2026 examination schedule: Paper 1 is 1 hour 30 minutes at Standard Level and 2 hours at Higher Level; Paper 2 is 1 hour 30 minutes at Standard and 2 hours 30 minutes at Higher. In that session Biology Paper 1 fell on Monday 11 May and Paper 2 on Tuesday 12 May, both morning sittings, in an examination period running from 24 April to 20 May 2026.

Should my child sit IGCSE Biology Core or Extended?

Extended, wherever there is genuine doubt. Core candidates take Paper 1 and Paper 3 and cannot be awarded above a grade C; Extended candidates take Paper 2 and Paper 4 and are eligible for the full A* to G range. The ceiling is set by the entry, months before anybody answers a question, and we have not found another provider in this market that mentions it. Both routes then add either Paper 5, the 1 hour 15 minute laboratory Practical Test, or Paper 6, the one-hour written Alternative to Practical. Both are 40 marks, both carry 20 per cent, and both assess the same experimental contexts — diffusion, osmosis, enzymes, photosynthesis. The entry is made by the examination centre, not at the desk on the day — ask which route and which practical paper your child is entered for.

How hard is a 7 in IB Biology?

Rare, on the IB's own numbers. In the May 2025 session, 33,102 candidates sat Biology at Higher Level for a mean grade of 4.5, with 7.2 per cent awarded a 7 and 16.6 per cent a 6. At Standard Level, 21,939 candidates averaged 4.3, with 5.9 per cent awarded a 7 and 13.9 per cent a 6. Grade boundaries move every session, so the outcome distribution is the more honest guide than any published boundary table. For context, the session-wide mean Diploma total was 30.6 points against a pass rate of 81.9 per cent, while International School Basel's 2026 cohort of 124 candidates averaged 35.2 points with 21 per cent above 40.

Which Basel gymnasium offers Schwerpunktfach Biologie und Chemie?

In Basel-Stadt, only two of the five: Gymnasium Kirschgarten and Gymnasium Bäumlihof. Gymnasium Leonhard, Gymnasium am Münsterplatz and the Wirtschaftsgymnasium do not offer it, so the choice of school quietly decides whether the subject is available in depth later on. Kirschgarten runs both scientific specialisations, Biologie und Chemie and Physik und Anwendungen der Mathematik. Bäumlihof describes its version as substantially extending the laboratory skills and base knowledge of the two core subjects, with work on genetic engineering, climate and pandemics. In Basel-Landschaft the canton lists Biologie und Chemie among the available Schwerpunktfächer across its five Gymnasien; we could confirm it school-by-school at Gymnasium Liestal, which also offers Biologie as an Ergänzungsfach.

Is biology taught in English at any Basel state school?

Yes. Gymnasium Kirschgarten teaches Geografie, Biologie and Chemie immersively in English from the first year, adding history in years 3 and 4. Biology alone accounts for 80 lessons in each of years 1, 2 and 3 — 240 lessons of English-medium biology inside the state system. Pupils who accumulate 800 immersion lessons across the subjects leave with the zweisprachige Matur. The same programme creates the mirror-image problem for a German-speaking child, who meets the technical vocabulary of a science subject in a second language, which is a very ordinary reason to book a few hours in the first term.

Does the EMS medicine entrance test include biology?

No, and this is worth being blunt about. The EMS is made up of eight groups of multiple-choice tasks plus the "Konzentriertes und sorgfältiges Arbeiten" subtest, measuring reasoning, memory and logical and spatial understanding over roughly four hours. It is not a subject-knowledge test, and biology revision does not improve the score. A Basel family aiming at medicine needs two separate things: a strong biology grade in the school-leaving qualification, and a strong EMS result. The University of Basel is one of the numerus clausus universities. For 2027 entry, pre-registration closes on 15 February 2027, EMS registration on 25 May 2027, and the test is sat on 9 July 2027, with places allocated by post in late July.

Where do lessons happen, and how far is Reinach?

At your home in Basel, Reinach, Aesch, Münchenstein, Riehen, Binningen, Muttenz or Liestal, at exactly the same price as online and with no travel charge. The geography matters here more than families expect: every ISB Diploma biologist studies at the Reinach campus on Fleischbachstrasse in Baselland, which the school serves by the number 11 tram, not in the city. Timetable data queried in August 2026 put Basel SBB to Münchenstein at about 15 minutes, to Aesch or Reinach at roughly 19 to 22 minutes, and Barfüsserplatz to Reinach at 29 to 33 minutes with a change — though replacement-bus legs appeared on that corridor at the time of the query, so treat those as an upper bound rather than a timetable. If you tell us your postcode when you enquire, we will say plainly what is workable and what is not before you pay anything — book a tutor, or send a WhatsApp message and ask first.
